An Ancient Gesture Analysis

I thought, as I wiped my eyes on the corner of my apron:
Penelope did this too.
And more than once: you can't keep weaving all day
And undoing it all through the night;
Your arms get tired, and the back of your neck gets tight;
And along towards morning, when you think it will never be light,
And your husband has been gone, and you don't know where, for years.
Suddenly you burst into tears;
There is simply nothing else to do.

And I thought, as I wiped my eyes on the corner of my apron:
This is an ancient gesture, authentic, antique,
In the very best tradition, classic, Greek;
Ulysses did this too.
But only as a gesture,—a gesture which implied
To the assembled throng that he was much too moved to speak.
He learned it from Penelope...

This poem is a one of a kind. I could probably write someting like this and never get reconized. But this one I believe most people love because of the simple "elegance" this poem contains. It does not have any special words like "flabbergasted" or "mome rath" or even an odd title like "The Jabberwocky". It not been extremly reconized but for those that have read Ulysses and read this poem it moves you in a kind of way. It's not anything special, anyone could write a poem with references to a book. But it has that charm that enchants you while reading it. The first tinme I read it I was reading a bunch of poems in a noisy classroom and when I was reading it the sound just seemed to melt away. It's the kind of a poem that you would want to read on a countryside sitting on the porch and listening to the quiet, peaceful, serene sounds of bird's chirping and flower's growing. It is just a poem that you can really enjoy and possibly some of us can relate to. Like I said, this poem has the simple elegance that poems used to have. It is truly a good poem and if anyone actually read this whole thing I applaude you. And remember this is only my opinion, I'm sure if you keep searching than someone else will say that they hate this poem. However, this poem should not be hated because it is amazing and anyone that hates it should remeber how long it takes to write a poem. Edna Millay probably took a long time to write this poem, she had to reaserch and then write and the poem has to flow. Millay did a wonderful job created an poem from a diffucult idea.
