Love's the boy stood on the burning deck
trying to recite "The boy stood on
the burning deck." Love's the son
        stood stammering elocution
while the poor ship in flames went down.

Love's the obstinate boy, the ship,
even the swimming sailors, who
would like a schoolroom platform, too,
        or an excuse to stay
on deck. And love's the burning boy.

The poem is written by Elizabeth Bishop first off stupid guest number one. It is a RESPONSE to Felicia Dorothea Herman\'s Casabianca. She repeatedly uses the words \"Love\" not indicating this is a love poem but indicating that Herman\'s original poem is a romantic version of heroic fantasy, written in a elegiac stanza. The reference to schoolroom platforms is an allusion to the recitation of Herman\'s poem by many school children at the time.
