Childless Father, The Analysis

Author: Poetry of William Wordsworth Type: Poetry Views: 970

"Up, Timothy, up with your staff and away!
Not a soul in the village this morning will stay;
The hare has just started from Hamilton's grounds,
And Skiddaw is glad with the cry of the hounds."

--Of coats and of jackets grey, scarlet, and green,
On the slopes of the pastures all colours were seen;
With their comely blue aprons, and caps white as snow,
The girls on the hills made a holiday show.

Fresh sprigs of green box-wood, not six months before,
Filled the funeral basin at Timothy's door;
A coffin through Timothy's threshold had past;
One Child did it bear, and that Child was his last.

Now fast up the dell came the noise and the fray,
The horse and the horn, and the hark! hark away!
Old Timothy took up his staff, and he shut
With a leisurely motion the door of his hut.

Perhaps to himself at that moment he said;
"The key I must take, for my Ellen is dead."
But of this in my ears not a word did he speak;
And he went to the chase with a tear on his cheek.

this story as the title suggests is about a man who no longer has a daugther. However, he apparently cannot come to terms with her passin and as such cannot close the door allowing her memory to be rested. Though he is he is sad the rest of the neighbour hood is in a festive mood highlighting that life goes on with or without you. Eventually he has come to realise that the only way to get over his lost is to close the door to her painful memory and face reality that she is gone and know the he should celebrate her life rather than lamenting on her death.

The title is suggestive of what the poem entails, a father, lamenting the loss of his only child. Because of this he is no longer able to be the person he once was. He is encouraged to face reality and move on. It was hunting season, where every person in the village would participate. No one was to be left behind. But even with all the excitement from the girls, Timothy's mind was only on the memory of his lost child.
