What happens to a dream deferred?

Does it dry up
Like a raisin in the sun?

Or fester like a sore--
And then run?

Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over--
like a syrupy sweet?

Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.

Or does it explode?

This poem is a really good poem at first I thought it was lame, but you must look deep into the poem to know what it is saying. I found a dream post poned to be a beautiful diaster.

i really liked this poem it has a question to it "what does happen tour dreams after they are over?" Hughes was a great writer. you have to know what hes talking about to know what it means, and what better way than a dream?...everyone dreams!

are you kidding? Hughes was amazing. He was an artist of words. Learn the deeper meaning and appreciate literature at its best. Thank you. PS This poem was very important in 1920's when the American dream had it's downfall and America as corrupted by racism, lack of freedom, while power and greed took over. Dreams became tasteless, lost its texture and over time lost its meaning due to such corruption.
