Have Me Analysis

Author: poem of Carl Sandburg Type: poem Views: 52

Have me in the blue and the sun.
Have me on the open sea and the mountains.

When I go into the grass of the sea floor, I will go alone.
This is where I came from—the chlorine and the salt are
     blood and bones.
It is here the nostrils rush the air to the lungs. It is
here oxygen clamors to be let in.
And here in the root grass of the sea floor I will go alone.

Love goes far. Here love ends.
Have me in the blue and the sun.

.: :.

The bodies of soldiers are being piled in mounds in various battle fields. There is no proper burial place in times of war and destruction so they simply ditch a "ditch" and cover the bodies with grass.
The grass serves as a veil or an allusion to hide the negative occurences in history.
Sandburg is trying to explain to us that too easily we disregard our history. Once we have disregarded it and generations fly by, no one is around to give an account to accuracy. Even within a short amount of time, "Two years, ten years", people forget the reasons of why they went to war and why they destroyed the lives of those around them.
