My soul is dark - Oh! quickly string
The harp I yet can brook to hear;
And let thy gentle fingers fling
Its melting murmurs o'er mine ear.
If in this heart a hope be dear,
That sound shall charm it forth again:
If in these eyes there lurk a tear,
'Twill flow, and cease to burn my brain.

But bid the strain be wild and deep,
Nor let thy notes of joy be first:
I tell thee, minstrel, I must weep,
Or else this heavy heart will burst;
For it hath been by sorrow nursed,
And ached in sleepless silence, long;
And now 'tis doomed to know the worst,
And break at once - or yield to song.

It states music is a balm for the pain of the soul, specially sad tones (But bid the strain be wild and deep,/Nor let thy notes of joy be first: )
It also express hope in the middle of despair (If in this heart a hope be dear,/That sound shall charm it forth again:)

he wants his sorrow to come out first because he feels the only way to be happy is to be empty of all other feelings.

I think this is talking about how the writer is sad and depress and lonely and feels empty. The writer's only sanctionary is listening to music.

For example, in lines 1 and 2, the harp is the person, who he wants to here from.

Line 3 refers to the person he wants, and suggest that he or she put their love to work.

There are two stanzas in this poem and the rhyme scheme is ABABBBCBC for the first stanza. The second stanza goes in DEDEEFEF.

The poem is in first person.
