At the earliest ending of winter,
In March, a scrawny cry from outside
Seemed like a sound in his mind.

He knew that he heard it,
A bird's cry, at daylight or before,
In the early March wind.

The sun was rising at six,
No longer a battered panache above snow...
It would have been outside.

It was not from the vast ventriloquism
Of sleep's faded papier-mâché...
The sun was coming from the outside.

That scrawny cry&mdasp;It was
A chorister whose c preceded the choir.
It was part of the colossal sun,

Surrounded by its choral rings,
Still far away. It was like
A new knowledge of reality.

The poems primarily speaks of art and perhaps the perception of the artist. It deals with that of which is immortal: art. The image of the sun is important as we today have learnt to identify the sun as being immortal only through the perceptions of art. Thus, it could be said that everything but art perishes. A painting may decay, its colour may run out, the lines of the poem may no longer be embedded in one\'s mind or their books. However, the essence of art lives on, thereby making humanity and the world a creation of art.
The concept of reality as described by Wallace Stevens must be taken in to consideration as well. He believed that \"reality\" was constructed by imagination as a response to desire. Imagination on the other hand is what is desired. Therefore, reality changes and desire fluctuates and thus needs to be replenish and renewed once more.
