Richard Cory Analysis

Author: poem of Edwin Arlington Robinson Type: poem Views: 26

Whenever Richard Cory went down town,
We people on the pavement looked at him:
He was a gentleman from sole to crown,
Clean favored, and imperially slim.

And he was always quietly arrayed,
And he was always human when he talked;
But still he fluttered pulses when he said,
"Good-morning," and he glittered when he walked.

And he was rich—yes, richer than a king—
And admirably schooled in every grace;
In fine we thought that he was everything
To make us wish that we were in his place.

So on we worked, and waited for the light,
And went without the meat, and cursed the bread;
And Richard Cory, one calm summer night,
Went home and put a bullet through his head.

This poem reads like a mother goose fairy tail the irony lays in the last line of the poem. Richard Cory is a well to do member of society. He has style and grace, is well educated, and is held in high regard by the people of the town. Richard Cory also has money, the poet states that he is “richer than a king.“ The poet is one of the town’s people, who live in poverty. The town‘s people work hard day in and out with little to show for all of their labor. They have little or no possessions of worth and go without meat to eat and “curse their bread“. The town‘s people long to be in Richard Cory’s shoes. They think that he has everything. Unfortunately Richard Cory does not see his life that way, he has money but not everything. In the end on a beautiful summer’s night Richard Cory shot and killed himself, maybe because he had no friend to stop him. And sadly this is where the fairy tail abruptly ends.
