I had to memorize this poem as a junior high school student in the early 1960's I still have in burned in my memory today and recite it eventhough 40+ years have passed. I always thought it meant the obvious..."you can see the stars better and night than in the day...especially when on a hill far away from city lights". No that is not it. with the death of my mother-in-law I have come to believe it means, "when things are darkest in your life, you can see the spiritual presence of god and the heavens more clearly than ever.
