Stars Analysis

Author: Poetry of Sarah Teasdale Type: Poetry Views: 2766

Alone in the night
On a dark hill
With pines around me
Spicy and still,

And a heaven full of stars
Over my head,
White and topaz
And misty red;

Myriads with beating
Hearts of fire
That aeons
Cannot vex or tire;

Up the dome of heaven
Like a great hill,
I watch them marching
Stately and still,
And I know that I
Am honored to be
Witness
Of so much majesty.

.: :.

I had to memorize this poem as a junior high school student in the early 1960's I still have in burned in my memory today and recite it eventhough 40+ years have passed. I always thought it meant the obvious..."you can see the stars better and night than in the day...especially when on a hill far away from city lights". No that is not it. with the death of my mother-in-law I have come to believe it means, "when things are darkest in your life, you can see the spiritual presence of god and the heavens more clearly than ever.
