Author: poem of Robert Frost Type: poem Views: 97

Love at the lips was touch
As sweet as I could bear;
And once that seemed too much;
I lived on air

That crossed me from sweet things,
The flow of -- was it musk
From hidden grapevine springs
Down hill at dusk?

I had the swirl and ache
From sprays of honeysuckle
That when they're gathered shake
Dew on the knuckle.

I craved strong sweets, but those
Seemed strong when I was young;
The petal of the rose
It was that stung.

Now no joy but lacks salt
That is not dashed with pain
And weariness and fault;
I crave the stain

Of tears, the aftermark
Of almost too much love,
The sweet of bitter bark
And burning clove.

When stiff and sore and scarred
I take away my hand
From leaning on it hard
In grass and sand,

The hurt is not enough:
I long for weight and strength
To feel the earth as rough
To all my length.

.: Masturbation :.

Bitter and sweet...that is almost as hideous as putting the word bittersweet in the poem. Forst is describing first love, and lust. The overwhelming hormonal urge of a young man....then, he discovers masturbation (dew on the on that is the only meaning). He then contrasts the need to masturbate with the pain of love....the stinging petal(petal=female love and moreover sex). "I take away my hand"...."all my length"...etc. Yes, sometimes things really are that simple. All this love, life, beginning, end, etc. is hooey. He was writing about the evoluation of innocent love/lust into masturbation and the need to masturbate, with some painful love mixed in. He was masturbating outside and wrote a poem about it. There you go.

.: To earthward frost :.

I believe the poem is about the contrasts between pain and pleasure, the bitterness and sweetness of love.
ex:
sweet: grapes, honeysuckle, roses
bitter: cloves, bitter bark

pain: the petal stings, not the rose
pleasure: longing to feel it "to all my length"
