To My Mother Analysis

Because I feel that, in the Heavens above,
The angels, whispering to one another,
Can find, among their burning terms of love,
None so devotional as that of "Mother,"
Therefore by that dear name I long have called you-
You who are more than mother unto me,
And fill my heart of hearts, where Death installed you
In setting my Virginia's spirit free.
My mother- my own mother, who died early,
Was but the mother of myself; but you
Are mother to the one I loved so dearly,
And thus are dearer than the mother I knew
By that infinity with which my wife
Was dearer to my soul than its soul-life.

i agree with the hearts of hearts but i dont agree with the regret. he's happy that his "step" mother (which is really his aunt) brought his wife Virginia to life and he is upset that his mother died and he is upset that is step mother died

i believe that the poem tells the love Poe had for his 13 year old cuzin whom was his wife not his real mother. n the regret he feels for the short time he was in love

This struck me. I wonder what he meant by "heart of hearts". Perhaps it means he holds the memories of many beloved people in his heart. I don't know but I would like to.

This work was actually addressed to his mother in law, who was also his aunt because edgar allen poe married his cousin.
"And thus are dearer than the mother I knew, by that infinity with which my wife was dearer to my soul than its soul life"

This is very deep. It's sad that his mother died early but i think she'd be proud if she knew he had missed her so much and cherished her so much.

This was an awesome poem! i can feel what he was feeling in his words. Edgar Allan Poe is an awesome poet.i can feel his lost over his mother. Edgar Allan Poe's mother must have been veryfortunate to have a son like that. Great job n this poe and all of the other poems you have written!
