This poem is retarded and I shouldn\'t have to study it.. It\'s about black kids who have no future and she ASSUMED all of this just by seeing a group of black boys. I find this poem offensive. There is nothing inspirational about it AT ALL. I myself am a black teenager and I wouldn\'t want some random lady to assume that I lead on this debauched lifestyle based just off of quick observation. Thank you.

Brooks is obviously trying to reach a younger audience with this to show that the \"glamour\" of dropping out of school is actually a perilous act that is done by people who lack education or common sense.
By using the short, fragmented, simple sentences, she shows that the speaker(s) of the poem aren\'t educated. (Hence their dropout)

I think this is stating that kids are really dumb when it comes to life.. All they care about is themselves. They think of the materialistic things instead of their education.. If they want to continue to stay out on the streets and think they are bigger and better than everyone, then they will be nothing, and sooner or later their lives are going to be destroyed.

I think that this is referring to the teens of the this generation. How we just don't care about are eduction and throw our llives out the window like they were trash and not as valuable as they are.

P.S.
I forgot to put in my other comment above I think that the words Brooks uses are kind of easy to understand and to get the meaning of it. The words she uses fit the poem in other words.

I think that brooks is trying to say that you guys don't think about anything more than tying this poem to a chair with a rope and get a confession out of it. Maybe you guys should enjoy the poem and think about it's meaning but not struggling to get out it's meaning. Also this poem can have a different meaning than what most of you think it means. Actually I do agree with you guys in the poem's meaning.
P.S.
I like this poem because I don't follow that path that they took and makes me think of the people around me that go in tha path or direction.

Brooks made it clear in the poem "We REal Cool" that death is imminenet and just around the corner if you decide to live a life of partying hard or go home mentality.

Strike straight" that kind of had me thinking about how she says "We.Strike straight". it almost sound as if she really knows that the boys really they are take a good path. this gives me something else to think which is as if i understand the aurthor. she must be religious and pretty obsevent.

why is there no we on the last stanza "we die soon"? is it suppose to mean they die alone since theres no we or is it just because the sentence is done?

The teens have no education; they live a carefree life; and they can care less about school because they find it tedious. Therefore, that will make it difficult for them to find a job and live a decent lifestyle, which basically leaves them no choice but to live the street life.
Their lives have no direction, and they don't really care about anything - not even their well being for the future. They have no sense of themselves and are not aware of the importance of education, which will sooner or later become their downfall.

.: "WE" :.

Brooks' is trying to say that "We" all do foolish things sometimes. This poem reminded me of my rebeillous years and how i thought i was so "cool" because i left school. i Thought that brook was trying to say that "we" all grow out of our rebellious years when she says "We die soon." If kids read this and truley understood that leaving school, lerking late, and singing sin isnt so "cool", then maybe alot of thos kids will live free, without proverty and unhappiness.
P.S
Miss Brooks inpired me to go back to school. i am now 16 and going to graduate from college this year.
thanks Brooks :)
