His bill an auger is,
His head, a cap and frill.
He laboreth at every tree,--
A worm his utmost goal.

this poem is really short. i think that the previous comments towards this poetic piece of writing is very over rated, as this poem does not touch me deeply, and goes about ad far in as my 2nd layer of skin. i think it is a very bad poem, and if you dont post this comment, you are only hiding and runing away from the real truth, no some fake and incorrect version!

i think the same.people are people and you can acheive your goals the easy way or hard way.

another may be that Emily Dickenson was sitting outside maybe at a pond with writing journal and out of the corner of her eye saw this beautiful cute woodpecker.

When i read this i feel that the poem goes deeper than a woodpecker. maybe its a person only accomplishing small goals and not trying to put forth the effort to do more except be average. now though some words i did not know i still for once got the jest of this poem. i love emily dickinson's work ever since 7th grade.

yet if this piece is about a woodpecker then i feel that maybe Emily was just sitting outside one day and watched a woodpecker strive for the worm.

another thing you can get out of this is maybe if this is about a person... maybe the person is striving to be better. and is going to complete everything they start.
