Work Without Hope Analysis

Author: Poetry of Samuel Taylor Coleridge Type: Poetry Views: 1916

All Nature seems at work. Slugs leave their lair--
The bees are stirring--birds are on the wing--
And WINTER slumbering in the open air,
Wears on his smiling face a dream of Spring !
And I, the while, the sole unbusy thing,
Nor honey make, nor pair, nor build, nor sing.

Yet well I ken the banks where Amaranths blow,
Have traced the fount whence streams of nectar flow.
Bloom, O ye Amaranths ! bloom for whom ye may,
For me ye bloom not ! Glide, rich streams, away !
With lips unbrightened, wreathless brow, I stroll :
And would you learn the spells that drowse my soul ?
WORK WITHOUT HOPE draws nectar in a sieve,
And HOPE without an object cannot live.

.: on Work :.

Our poet confesses his inactivity brought on by depression. While nature is rising early on the rush of Spring, Coleridge is still trapped in drowsiness; but not a completely voluntary drowsiness: he is under some sort of spell. He is persuaded that his own efforts will not yield anything; he is shovelling water. Though a working poet, he had not been able to get the wreaths of glory, or social support, that he wanted (though in this poem he doesn't say what they were exactly). He was 52 when the poerm was published. The end of the poem is undefined, since, although the image of unrewarded labor is clear enough, it is unclear what sort of object Hope might have. In other words, from "work" to "hope" does not seem to share a direction with "hope" to "object." But it seems likely that "hope" and "object" are meant to be more than mere synomyms for "work" and "hope."
