 Topic  why so few comments?
Message  How come there are always so few comments compared to views? I personally never view a piece without commenting on it, and try to comment on about 7 a week.

Message  I agree. I have been a member since ’03 and I’ve never received a smaller amount of comments than I’ve had recently. I think it’s due to the fact that the members are 14, 15, 16 year olds now who just read everyones poetry trying to learn how to write. Kids are not going to leave comments.

Message  this site used to be wonderful with commenting, when they had that restriction where you had to have 75% to post something.

does that still exist? if it doesn’t, they should bring it back.

 Subject  Thirsty for comments
Message  I hate it when I don’t get comments. They barely squeeze in. They are like little drops of liquid gold that I must lap up to quench my golden thirst. But I am dry, very dry, and I wish I was quenched.

I am not innocent. I have looked at some pieces and not commented. Go ahead and yell. But I’m trying not to do that. I try to comment on just about everything I read. My percentage is about 108.5% or something like that. That’s pretty good, considering that I’ve now given more comments than received. I hope to some day make it to that golden achievement of 140%...through true comments of course. Not through blather just to reach that point. I want to work my way there through generosity. I think we should all strive for that.

Message  I think every poem you read from beginning to end should be commented on. If you don’t think you’re smart enough or don’t want to bother with something you hate, bullcrap. If intellect is the problem, just give whatever’s running through your head at the time, no matter how nonsensical. SOME feedback is better than no feedback, even if it’s stupid. And if you hate it? Tell them why you hate it. Tough shit if they get upset. How are you helping them? If everyone just sat back like you and didn’t comment because they hated it or faked good comments to not piss them off, they’ll think they’re good because they’re never criticized. Say what you think about peoples’ work. Don’t sugar coat it and don’t take crap from them if they get mean about a comment you made. Just ignore them. Simple. All of these excuses simply sum up the problem and do nothing to counter it.

Message  I’ve been here for a little while now, and it took me time to really get into the whole commenting thing. I was definitely selfish at times and other times I simply felt that I didn’t have enough knowledge and experience with writing to give useful feedback to most of the better writers here. Over time I’ve changed so that I’m finally commenting more than receiving, but the trend seems to continue with others. It seems that people are afraid to comment at times because of some ridiculous internet retaliation that they mar receive, and other times people are just lazy. I’ve been there. Nowadays though, even if I absolutely despise a piece, I’ll at least tell the writer why I hated it. Some of the stuff on this site is junkyard quality, but sometimes you have to pound and twist and weld the scrap metal you find before you ever are able to clean and polish the new machine. Don’t be afraid to dig in and teach the kids how to get diamonds from coal because then you’re just as selfish as someone who doesn’t comment out of sheer laziness.

Message  Well, I am new here, and I’m sorry if I’m adding to the problems, but I am reading and trying to learn alot. In regard with that, I’ve been commenting on various things I’ve read unless I think it’s total crap, because that isn’t going to help anyone. I’ve yet to post any of my own writing as I wanted to make sure I was taking the comments I’ve read here seriously.

Message  Hey, I’m new here, and have put up about 7 pieces but got only 4 comments. I’m going to try and take this into my own hands and try commenting on every poem I read, we have to set an example first.

Message  i think it would be a good idea that people that have under 75% comment whatevers should not be able to post anymore work until they get it up... i found someone on here today with a 5% or something but he had over 200 works posted...

the only problem with this idea is that when they do go to comment on peoples writings they’d probably just put some bullshit comment up that isnt helping anybody...

as for people not being appreciative of constructive criticism... just ignore them... you tried to help them.. which is why they joined this site... to help and recieve help from other writers... they take it the wrong way... whatever... they just arent worth your time anymore... it’s not like you have to deal with them on a day to day basis in person... that’s the great thing about the internet... but dont let it get you down or make younot want tocomment anymore... there are a lot of good people on this site that are worth checking out and commenting on.. and a lot of people that CAN take that sort of criticism as long as it IS constructive and not mean

Message  If I read a poem that I absolutely hate... I’m not going to comment.

Last time I attempted to criticise a poem that was... to put it lightly - a crime to the English language... the guy in question got all pooey and made a big Kablowee over me and my honest comment (which I believed to be gently executed).

If I have to put up with such nonsense... why would I want to bother?

Message  Amount of users should never be a problem unless the excess members are lazy and selfish and don’t contribute. I personally take the time to comment on everything I can.

Message  I think the rule should be enforced that when someone comments on your work you need to comment on something of theirs. . . for every piece of work they comment on. In this way, feedback would be a lot quicker and those who are seriously into poetry would be the ones to get comments. Those who take time to give comments, get them. I don’t rely on the new postings, rather people I deem interesting from the forums or from specific types I look up. I’m a hard-core commentor, especially when I’m not busy. Once, through a forum, I commented on every piece of written work in-depth with a paragraph/stanza by paragraph/stanza breakdown. That’s usually how I comment. Even with so many here, and it being too difficult and time consuming to do that, I still try to give a fairly lengthy analysis.

Message  yeah I always comment back on people who have commented on my works. And I expect for people to return the favor. I mean its only fair...and its extremely annoying when your work has been viewed about 30 times with no comment. frusterating!!!
