Message   Speaking as someone who was allowed to act... eccentric during a period of my life because I was turning out chunk after chunk of art and causing the people around me to profit, I would suggest you avoid writing with drugs at all.
Quite a hypocritical thing for me to say, since I spent two years without ever coming down, and spent the bulk of this time either making music (sold without my permission) or stories (plagarized from me for use on college essays) or ruining relationship (I can take full credit for all of these.) However, it seems to me that in the end writing while using drugs is a short term benefit. Several things can go wrong. You can get into a situation where you are unable to take the drugs, and when you try to write, you discover that it’s complete bollocks. You can take more of the drugs and discover that you have gone too far, and that the differences in behavior far outweigh the benefits to your art. You can kill yourself, that’s always a big downside.
Anyway, drugs are generally a long term hinderance to a short term benefit. But, most things fun are. It all depends on how much you’re willing to give up of yourself in one sense to further yourself in another

Message  i’ll be the first to admit that i find a lot of inspiration from smoking weed, drinking, or popping the occasional prescription pain killer... what i tend to do is write down my ideas, which often are amazing (yeah i flatter myself) and go back to them later, since whatever i try to write while intoxicated ends up as one good line and a bunch of giberish... some of my best stuff has come out of being fucked up, so i know how you feel, but i always edit and re-write while sober, so i can ensure some other sober person can understand and relate...
anyways, next time you smoke, toke one for me...

Message  I believe some light drugs (the term used loosely) can be used once in a while for the ocassional opening up of the mind and inspiration rush. I’ve used pot for that purpose, a few extra pills of kava or passion flower, et cetera, to induce a bit of something something here and there. But overall, drugs should NOT be used to improve writing and the fact that you are using them to alter your skill from its normal level (drugs are defined as mind-altering and that includes the abilities you have or think you have) is considered the abuse of a drug. The use of a drug is the casual use of it to serve its specific purpose for which it’s distributed. For instance, I’m given kava for relaxation of my nerves so I don’t freak out on people because of my disorders. I use it for that purpose, but during its -normal- use, sometimes I’m so relaxed that I write nice poetry that reflects the mood. Abusing it is taking extra (which I have done, as I said), or using it specifically for purposes it’s not really for, like improving writing. Now, you might say, ’who defines what a drug is used for’. . . doctors, mostly. Drugs are too serious to mess with just for writing. If you need improved writing, I’d suggset something like I-Dose or just relaxing somewhere inspirational.

Message  I think I see where your coming from, somewhat of less severe Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas style . I say do what makes you happy as long as others do not get hurt in the process, and if you hurt yourself you must live with the consequences. However, you should not let something take total control of your life to the point where you think you can not function without it. Some of the greatest writers were known to take drugs, I believe Poe was one of them, but look how he ended up. Moderation is the key, and if you are questioning yourself, your behavior, then something may be off.

Do you really need drugs to write ’properly’? There are other ways to get high... naturally ie extreme sports. In my experience, believing drugs makes you write better is just a placebo, nothing more. Sure, things written under the influence of LSD (as an example) might seem fantastic at the time, but have you actually read how it comes out? It’s usually an incoherent mess... that took way too long to come up with.

Moderation dude... I’m not for or against drugs, but if you’re going to do it, cut down. It’ll make the times when you do far more pleasurable and defining. You know, like having a glass of red wine after dinner, instead of 2 bottles in one sitting... that sort of thing.

Just my two cents.
