Message  altered is right, rhythm is very important in terms of flow; if it’s off the reader will stumble and the gist of the line will lose its import. in free verse meter isn’t as important becuase the words are what’s important. just tap your finger as you read your lines. that should help you determine whether the rhythm is okay or not. if it’s off then you need to make changes to support that rhythm you’ve established, hopefully without losing the intent and tone.

Message  Meter is music. Strict meter is based on reoccuring sound patterns, i.e. da-Dum (iambic), Dum-da (trochaic) and so forth. It adds musical accents to sum it up. Lots of free-verse uses meter (unbeknownst to some writers; they employ it subconsciously), resulting in natural cadences which follow speech patterns, and which results in what you would term ’flow’.

Lots of info on the net. Google it.
