Message  I went to an Arts Fair this summer and attended several poetry readings. What I discovered is that poetry can be about absolutely anything - anything at all. It didn’t have to be deep and meaningful to be good - it just had to be good! One poet wrote about the car-to-car flirtation she had with a driver on the freeway while commuting. It was fantastic! Another wrote little daily observations in poetic form while his mother was dying of cancer. The individual subjects were as mundane as pudding in the hospital.

Look around the room you’re in. Write a poem about the shapes you see - their sensuality or their stiffness; their regimentation or the lack of a plan in furnishing the room. Imagine you are one of the pieces of furniture in the room. What’s it like to be you? Write a poem about it.

Write about the playground, either a present-day playground full of children or empty and silent, or the playground you remember from your childhood. Write about the circle of mushrooms in your front yard. See what I mean? mae
