 Topic  .... Feminist?
 Message  What is a feminist?

Dictionary.com says: A person whose beliefs and behavior are based on feminism.

That really helps me alot. I act like myself these days and I don’t care who I offend. I don’t see how that makes one a feminist. I believe I was as good a soldier as the men in my unit; that makes me a feminist? Why do we even use that word when presently its lost its meaning; not that anyone ever knew what it was....

Message  It’s the classic writing dilema of "conotation" versus "denotation".

The working definition of feminist is, as Mae noted, one who is conserned with the rights of women. It can be a bit of a loaded word though in political discussions, bringing along all sorts of baggage - some deserved and some just plain bigoted.

I don’t think it would be unfair to call someone by various foul names who would use the term in an impolite way to describe someone for simply living their own life.

-Frank

ps: It reminds me of a quote from Grapes Of Wrath that goes something like "Everybody’s calling everybody else Red - whatever that means."

Message  You called me obnoxious! lol What I mean by I don’t care who I offend is more like as far as my-so called-friends go. I’m usually very soft spoken and respectful of other peoples opinions but it ticks me off that just because I want to be me and like what I like [domino, female heros, chickbands etc] they want to call me a feminist. When I got offended I wondered why I had a bad association with the word I decided that I should find out for myself if I should be. I thought that ment you were a raging bulldyke, or that you hate men, but after reading about it and all the sub groups under it I still don’t really belong in any of them. So I posted that just to see who else had it confused I guess.

Message  In my opinion, a feminist is one who is focused on the rights and treatment of women specifically by society or by men rather than on general human rights or the general treatment of everyone. Feminists usually have specific ideas about what is "politically correct" and what isn’t as far as women are concerned and usually consider women to be oppressed, in general, even in developed countries.

May I ask you a question? Why don’t you care if you offend people? Are you and your opinions more valuable than they or their opinions, so that it is acceptable for you to offend them? I don’t think that behaving that way makes you a feminist. It probably just makes you obnoxious. But then, I don’t really know, having just met you. I do hope I didn’t offend you - just saying what I think.
