He is writing a series of poems about famous paintings and the one he’s just posted is called "Girl Reading" about the famous painting by Renoir. Check it out. It’s beautiful. Go to fredmelden. mae |

Of course it’s an expression, and it can be a release, but that doesn’t make it good - which, I thought, was the question here - how to become a better poet. If all you ever do is write your emotions without learning the craft of writing, how will you improve? The fact is, you do NOT have to have a deep emotional attachment to write a good poem. That isn’t to say that you never write about things with which you DO have a deep emotional attachment. Emotion, however, does not automatically make a poem good. And, yeah, SOMEONE will always like it. Your mother, your spouse. But then, they like the things you did at age 3 also. That didn’t make them good. mae |

Know it all people who think of poetry as a science instead of an expression of oneself or a release. I think that as long as you’re being true to yourself you will touch others and they will be able to relate. You can’t make everybody like your poetry, but someone always will. |

Focusing on your own emotions and only your own emotions is a sign of an immature writer. Do you honestly think Longfellow had strong emotions about "The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere" or "The Song of Hiawatha?" How about Lewis Carroll when he wrote "Jabberwocky?" Emotion does not make a good poet. Learning your craft (plus a certain amount of natural talent) does. mae |

Digging deep inside yourself for the things that really make you tick whether it be good or bad. People can sense fake poetry because it doesn’t touch them, it’s just words on paper. The rest I think just comes. |

Writing is a craft that requires exercise to get better - just like sports or painting or anything else in life. But don’t just write what you’ve always written. Read GOOD stuff and examine what it is that makes it good. Study, in other words, the craft of poetry. mae |

Don’t just think about how you feel about something. Think also about what that means for you, for the world, for the things you care about. |
