| User | girlinthephoto | | Topic | critiques | | Message | Hey I’m new here and just wanted to ask about the critiquing system here. i’ve been on some writing websites where if you try to give any sort of constructive criticism half the members lash out at your for being bitchy and rush to each other’s aid with their verbal pats on the back.. don’t want to step on anyone’s toes by giving criticism that isn’t welcome.. so if someone could just let me know...
thanks :)

To say something is good or bad, is shallow.
To point out why you like your dislike something, is invaluable to the writer.

People should be as annoyed with "that sucked" the same as "that was brilliant". Opinions bad or good are welcome. Yes. Saying "that sucked" is horrible! Why? Opinions are fine. What about "that was brilliant". Same thing. Opinion. No detail. Shouldn’t it be just as offensive? Detail is everything. If it was brilliant it could get a few more words in tribute. |

Your worst critics were the ones who never saw anything in your work worth commenting about. At least if someone tells you they didn’t like your work, they are respecting you enough to give you honest feedback. Maybe they liked your other works, or maybe they think your piece is worthy of a re write to improve it. I’d rather have someone say, "that made me sick", than no comment, or "nice one". At least I would know how the work was received. |

It is a site to give and receive ideas on improving your work. Anyone who thinks their work is beyond improvement should probably skip ES and go right to an agent so they can get published and start making the big bucks *wink*.
Still there are people who are hurt by any criticism. There are also some members, or ex members, who thought critique was telling someone their work sucks. No personal attacks. But I’ve seen your work, and you knew that.
Welcome, have fun.
