| User | Mister Fizzle | | Topic | picking your poison | | Message | How do you guys pick which poems to comment on and to read in general on here. I used to just go right down the new submissions 1st page and then I’d go read a few poems from people who had commented on my poems.
But lately I have found it more enjoyable to find a poet and just read 4 or 5 of their pieces. then I get really picky about the next poet I pick and repeat the process when I find a good one. I have found it to be a little more fun to actually comment on these peoples work than to go through the basic "typo, typo, forced rhyme, repetitive verbage" speech a hundred times.
So how do you guys do it?
Just curious.

| User | TZPhelps | 2005-01-08 | | | Subject | honestly | | Message | To be perfectly honest, I have no idea how I end up commenting on the poems I do, its as if a random poem fairly pulls them up when i’m not looking. That and returning favors for people who take time to comment on my work of course. |
| User | mae | 2005-01-05 | | | Subject | My process is | | Message | similar to yours, but a little different. I haven’t developed the habit of seeking out poets who’ve either commented on my work or that I’ve read before. I really need to work on that. Anyway, I go to the Elite Posts page and read through all those, then go to the Account page and click on Random Member Profile and read whoever pops up. I’ve found a lot of poets who are new to me that way.
As far as deciding which ones to comment on, if I REALLY like it, I’ll say so, plus offering any suggestions that I see, or if I see something that could be good but has serious flaws, then I will comment and try to point out the problems I see and how they could be corrected.
I apologize to all those who’ve commented on my work and I haven’t returned the favor. I really will start working on that omission. mae |
| User | secret moon | 2005-01-03 | | | Subject | untitled | | Message | I try to find a poem that I like, and if I really like it then I will go on and read more of that poet’s work. But if I find a poem that I just like a little, or that I think can be fixed, I will do a revision or give pointers to that person. But there are those poems that just cannot be saved. . . alas. What are you supposed to say to those people, because they’re usually the ones that think they’re going to make millions of dollars on their "wonderful poetry". I just don’t comment on those. |
| User | Sandburg | 2004-12-22 | | | Subject | untitled | | Message | I’ll go through the recents twice, and I’ll go through maybe the first 12 pages or so, sometimes all the way til I get to where Iwas yesterday. The first pass I’m looking for members like you, writers I know and am actually waiting for a new post from.
The second pass I’m looking for people I don’t recognize or don’t normally visit. That time through I go by titles. If it’s untitled I probably won’t be looking. If it has something intriguing as a title, say "self portrait of the poet as a young dog"
I’m in, ya know? Heck, a title like that would probably get read on the first pass.
Now let’s see if anyone will take that prompt and run with it!

| User | phil askew | 2004-12-19 | | | Subject | Commenting | | Message | Fiz - The process I use is very similar to yours. First I go to the Elite Posts, then to those who have commented, often times when I find a poet that strikes a chord I’ll read several pieces and comment on those. After this effort I’ll go to the "people" section and look for a new name and try that particular poet. It all comes down to a search for names. I think a complete list of the users on this site, would be a valuable addition. With such a list we could venture out and try new poets. At present you either find one on Elite posts, or on your own page, or in the people page. This is a very narrow selection. I’m sure there are some wonderful writers here that I have no knowledge of, because of the timing of Elite posts, the "people" page, and their not seeing my name for the same reasons. Let’s have a complete list so the night-owls get to read the sunshine poets and vice-versa. |
