Message  It is selfish, but that selfishness is natural. Humans are, generally and psychologically speaking, extremely egocentric. You can’t really conceive any reality outside of your own. Even though you might have empathy, you’re still involved in your own reality, isolated. So when people think of suicide, even when it involves thoughts of others, it’s almost entirely egocentric. They’ll either say ’no one cares about ME’, ’they’ll be said if I’M gone’, ’I don’t belong here’, ’They won’t miss ME anyway’, ’I don’t want to live anymore’. . . The fact is, they kill themselves for personal reasons; the inability to death with their own reality. And they might consider reasonable feelings of others, ’they’re probably sad,’ ’they’re probably hurt’. . . but it’s still centered on the self because they’re not really killing themselves for anyone else’s good, and to do so under that notion would again be selfish because they don’t KNOW, they’re only assuming it’s what everyone else wants.

Message  Is suicide selfish? Yes. Wanna know why? It’s because the person contemplating it can’t see anything beyond their own pain and guilt. That’s what being depressed is like. I ultimately didn’t kill myself only because I was able, through some miracle, to think my wife and son.

Message  and if everyone there would be to leave behind hated you anyway? You were the dork at school everyone made fun of, you weren’t really that bright, and your home life wasn’t going great? Would that still be selfish? I definitely agree with Blue Monk

Message  Well, of course it’s selfish. A person who commits suicide has given no thought to what they’re doing to the people they’re leaving. But so what? There are more important issues in that person’s life than whether or not they’re being selfish. Those who live with the suicidal person are also being selfish - more so, in my opinion, if they want the suicidal person to focus on what they’re doing to those around them. If a person feels that life is so bad, it would just be better to end it, how would focusing on their own selfishness help that? It would only make them feel worse and even more like everyone would be better off without them.

Yeah, suicide is selfish, but that’s not the important issue - or it shouldn’t be, anyway. mae

Message  It doesn’t really matter because once it’s all over, you’re not there.
There are no real repercussions except for the permanent lack of consciousness.
Yeah, I’m a selfish suicidal bastard.

Message  i would say it’s selfish. while it’s true, for many people who commit suicide it is "not just a conscious decision one ponders for fun", the decision in itself is ultimately selfish. whether it is a decision made out of someone’s inability to cope with their current circumstances, an attempt to make a name for oneself and/or make a statement, or an action taken when one has accepted the belief that his or her life is worthless, and they are not strong enough to try to change that...it’s ultimately a decision made revolving around the individual who chooses suicide. even if the foolish decision is made because this person feels guilty about what they have done or allowed to happen to another person, suicide is still, in my opinion, EXTREMELY selfish. if someone commits suicide because of guilt, they are only trying to escape that personal feeling and are certainly not making things better for the person(s) they have hurt...anyway, there’s my two cents.

Message  It only seems that way to others who understand nothing.

I suspect that concern for the feelings of others could also include not wishing to bother them with your problems, but total self absorption is characteristic of depression leading to suicide. It’s an illness of the mind which involves a loss of rational thought, not a conscious decision one ponders just for fun.
