| User | Mister Fizzle | | Topic | Getting Published | | Message | Hey everybody, I just thought I’d start a little thread here where people could give advice on getting published. There are probably alot of talented writers out there who aren’t really sure what are good places to submit their work to or where to go or whatever. Maybe some of the published vets can help out.
Peace,

They offer a basic publishing package at around 6-700 dollars, and its pretty much guaranteed that you’ll get published. There’s no dealing with literary agents, or nit picky editors (unless you request one) and you retain all the rights to your work, so if a traditional publisher like Bantam or Penguin Putnam or Tor read your stuff and wanted to buy it, you could sell it to them. If you’re suspicious about self publishing, then read ’Eragon’ by Christopher Paolini. Its not the most original novel out there, but it is pretty good, it was picked up by a traditional publisher, and now Fox is making a movie based on it, and Paolini wrote that book when he was 14. Any way, this is starting to sound like an advertisment, which I shouldn’t do, but check it out.

Poets and Writer’s Inc also Poets & Writers Magazine has a listing of contest and the deadlines coming up. Most of them have reading fees, but they also have publishing contracts as part of the prize. These are well respected literary publishing houses or university press publishers. Most of these are looking for unpublished poets and manuscripts.
I would like to caution those of you thinking about self publishing. The cost to you is often substancial, even for POD or Publish On Demand publishers. There are a few traditional publishers that are willing to read your work, but the competition is pretty tough and you may be responsible for getting together promotional packs to send to bookstores, ect.
Please research carefully before you make your move. There a a ton of ways to get things published, but be sure you are confortable with the one you choose, and research the company first. That also goes for selecting an agent. I’ve heard good stories and bad. Agents are not a must, but they do help negotiate the contract phase and sending out your work...if their doing their jobs. |

Look to your local university and get in touch with the English department.
Doesn’t matter whether or not you are enrolled.

It lists all periodicals that accept submissions of poetry, and it tells what they are looking for. That way you don’t submit something about Satanic Worship to a church publication. Also it tells length and subject matter requirements for these sources. For general writing there is also an annual Writers Handbook that does much the same for all other types of writing, from novels to news. There are also some magazines with this kind of info. The June issue of Poets and Writers Magazine had a listing of sources accepting manuscripts as well as places to submit to contests and places to apply for grants. Visit the book store and buy a grande french roast while you peruse!
Good Luck!
PS, part of that Barnes & Noble writing class is about getting published.
