 Topic  Ignore Feature
Message  In the run up to our on site elections in October 04, Jaycee and Kristina came up with the idea of an "ignore" function, to block offensive users. I have asked jimmy three times to implement a function like this, which would offer users the chance to block other members that they feel are offensive.

What do you think of this? Is it a good idea, or bad? Would you like to see such a feature made available on site?

Message  No, it isn’t abused, really. We get a few ignorant trolls that like to reincarnate after being banned and so we all put them on ignore and no one has to read their crap. Unless they want to. But who’d want to? I don’t think it could be abused, it merely blocks the posts of the offending user, if you have them on your ignore list. I think the majority of us here would be unlikely to iggy someone just because they gave us comments we don’t like. That is part of the writing process, receiving criticism both good and bad, and I think the serious writers understand this concept.

Message  redthewitch, is it abused? I think that’s what some of tptb( "the powers that be" )are afraid will happen. mae

Message  I think it is a good idea, as to control the troll population. I don’t think it is always possible to solve every problem with every user. We have this nifty feature on one the other forums where I post, and all of us members are really thankful for this.

Message  Thanks guys, for everyone’s opinions on this so far. I think it’s quite interesting how some people say "aye" and others give a "nay"... This feature isn’t going to be implemented but was interested to hear what others had to say.

 Subject  No...
Message  I personally think it’s a bad idea, because instead of solving the problem with the user, you are just saying that you are happy with being angry at them, you know? Not to mention it would take up a lot of space on the server... If someone is giving you trouble I think talking it out with them should be the first step, and if that doesn’t work and they’re just plain being abusive tell Jimmy. My opinion, take it or leave it.

Message  what about webmaster approval? nevermind...it would be too time-consuming. I understand, I really do...and I do not think that a person should be able to ignore another because they don’t like the critique they received...however, the harrassment seems to be at record numbers in here right now and I don’t see a way being posed to stop it.

Jimmy, if we let one adolescent harrasor tell all of his/her friends and they tell all of their friends....well...WHAT can we do here? You are a busy man. Can you take on every complaint when there become too many to deal with? What happens when the forum is full of Solomon disease Linkin Park NC Cloud Zim_zum el_ppin lost in beers? Do you relinquish your site?

Honestly, I think that it is in the near future that this site becomes infested with rats.

Jimmy, question for you...

of all of the users that log on, how many actually DO use the forum?

Message  Maybe it’s a guy thing?

The reasoning is simple.
Slower loading times for all in the sake of blocking 2 or 3 people.

If they’re being abusive, contact me giving the link and quotes.
If they’re being stupid, ignore their post and talk about the previous post.

Being abusive back or initiating an attack lowers the likelyhood of ban.

Message  the problem with ignore whatever is that you will inevitably create circles and cliues within the site.
i dont think it is good if we can choose who we want to comment and not comment on our work, even if they are being a little co-ck.
there are plenty of things in place to catch knob jockeys so why ad another.
and why encourage more closed circles and segregation and whatever else.
we should all be strong enough to put up with rantings and spamming and other sh-it, we have all got it at some point, and the place is still standing, so why add more to the list and why not spend more time on more inportant issues,
like catching moths and breaking beds

Message  LOL Do you think that anyone would mind being ignored by some of the assholes in this place? If that’s abuse, then gimme a wifebeater and a 40 bottle... I need to get psyched up for some smackin’!

I’ll help you beso.

An ignore feature is a good idea, but considering the type of people I find around this site I think that it will get a lot of misuse. It will be abused.

Message  but most people on the site doent use the forum... and of the ones that do, only a few ever oppose anything... i’m not trying to say that my opinion is the better one on this issue.. i’m just saying you can’t get an accurate representation of anything using the forum...

Message  Maybe you could do something like Webmaster’s general pm’s that announce new things on the site. Send a vote feature or a link to here. Could you do something like that? mae

Message  yeah, Beso... out of the whole thread, you’re the only person who said no. That’s a 6:1 agreement so far. I started this thread and had to respond to it in some way, so I said that.
Should I spam the site with links to this thread so that we CAN get a more realistic number?

Message  a LOT of support? there’s like 4 or 5 people that agreed... that’s not a good representation of the site as a whole....

Message  Obviously a lot of support for this feature.

I personally think it could be exactly what the site needs; what we don’t know/can’t see doesn’t hurt us.

Message  Honestly,I think that it’s a great idea. And especially with the number of people we have logging in on here. Like the stalk list, I think there should be a set number of people that you can put on your ignore list. I would make the number at 5 or 6. First of all, I think it would correct the attitudes of certain users if they thought they were going to be ignored by everyone they harrassed. Of course the person dishing out the harrassment would leave ater being ignored by all of the users he or she is trying to harrass. They’d have no one left to harass. And I would prefer that they leave. As far as people ignoring others for a comment they disagree with, well, I think this site has enough members for the reciprocation to not be an issue. How many posts do we get in here a day? There’s plenty of work in here to comment on after you subtract the blocks.

Lately there has been a steady flow of users that are just plain mean. Being able to ignore them would make this site a more relaxing experience, and would lighten Jimmy’s workload. He has to sort through all of the complaints when there’s a problem. Every other poetry or blog site I belong to has an ignore feature. I’ve never been harrassed on any of those sites, which the exception of one blog, and it was Mark zimzum O’Connel, who followed me over there from here. I’ve never been harrassed so much for doing nothing wrong as I have in here.

So obviously, I’m all for this feature.

Message  And beso, what’s the point of having it if you have to ask for someone’s permission to use it? I doubt that it would be abused. Most people enjoy receiving comments so they aren’t going to be ignoring comment givers right and left. I repeat, I think it’s a really good idea. mae

Message  i dont think it’s a good idea to add an ignore feature.... unless it was somehow run through a moderator or something and you had to show how they bullied you.. otherwise people would start ignoring people left and right because they left a comment they didnt like that they couldnt handle.. or ignore people that didnt really do anything to them.. and then these certain people that would get ignored would end up with bad recirpocations and get fed up and leave the site... and i think that’s fucked up... this is a site open to anybody that wants to be here (with the exception of the extremely rude like my buddy zim).. i think an ignore feature would be just one more thing to cause unneeded drama around here...

if it did go into affect though, i think there should definitly be a small limit to the number of people you can ignore.. like a 3 person max... cause if you’re getting harrassed by more people than that i think there’s something wrong with you...

i dont know though.. i wouldnt ignore anybody... i’ve only been harassed once and that person got banned that same day cause i just told jimmy about it... i think the ban system is pretty good.. other than these recent flaws of people coming back under different accounts...

Message  i think it’s a great idea. we all know there are quite a few "cyber bullies" around here (that is actually a term, and i’ve read a few articles about young kids being devastated by these punks who have nothing better to do than harrass other people on-line). i hope Jimmy will implement it. i’m sure he doesn’t appreciate what’s been going on around here, particularly in the debate section. unfortunately, they can’t be banned from here. we can just try to ignore them...

now, let’s see how long it is before one of those idiots jump in here to spread their grime further... 1 , 2 , 3...
