| User | shatteredroses | | Topic | Preview Images | | Message | I’ve tried uploading images for a couple of my writings on a couple of different sites and always seem to get the annoying Microsoft ’X’
Is this a problem on my end? Or is it a site issue? |

Twack, if you create a free yahoo account it comes with a geocities site. Geocities has an online tool called "File Manager" that allows you to upload to your website. So, I get my image, usually with no more than a width of 375 max, and a simple name like say twacked.jpg, then use file manager to upload it to my geocities site. Then, I link the image location in the poem’s profile, where you create or edit it, to read something like www.geocities.com/twacky/files/twacked.jpg and then the image displays normally. ES doesn’t actually host images, so you must host them yourself and link to them. To do this from your computer (linking) doesn’t work due to security permissions <and you wouldn’t want it to because it would leave you wide open to hacks and other baddies>. I hope this makes sense, if not PM me and I can clarify whatever you didn’t understand.
Pic Link = www.geocities.com(*or wherever it is physically located*)/yoursiteID(yahooID)/files(or folder on your website containing the image)/imagename.jpg (actual name of the pic), or in the case of a geocities site created from a yahoo name of "twacky", and with a pic name of "twacked.jpg", in a folder on your geocities site called "files" it would look like this in the image URL for the poem:
www.geocities.com/twacky/files/twacked.jpg
Again, when creating or selecting images to use on the site, best to use paint or photoshop to resize them to a width of 375 or less, (length doesn’t matter). You can get a free tool that’s easy to use for viewing and resizing images at www.hamrick.com or you can go to the ziff-davis site and find just about any kind of software you want, freeware, shareware, trialware, or whatever (you have to search for the type you want, in this case "graphics" software, at www.softseek.com.
Some ppl here have had trouble with photobucket and other sites like this, as they have a habit of closing down after awhile . . . or whatever. Having your own site is far more reliable and it’s free too.

| User | Kristina9178 | 2005-05-09 | | | Subject | untitled | | Message | Alot of users on elite use photobucket to store their images. You can go to photobucket.com, create an account and upload your images, then copy the url and paste it in the url box in your entry submit. Also, make sure that you don’t copy the "http://" into the box because it’s already provided. Another problem that I’ve come across is having filenames that are too long. When you copy the filename into the box, make sure that the entire address is copied. If it does not, you may need to shorten the filename of the image. I have had the same problem and these are the steps that I took to correct it.
I hope this helps. Good luck =) |
| User | sierramuse8 | 2005-05-09 | | | Subject | 5-9-05 | | Message | I think also you have to make sure it’s saved as a jpeg or a gif, but I’m not sure. I have not completely worked it out myself! I have had the same problem. I was going to try uploading the pictures in yahoo pictures and then posting them with that address and see what happens. |
| User | Vancrown | 2005-05-09 | | | Subject | untitled | | Message | I know the links don’t upload the images to the ES site, that they pull the images from whatever site you host them on. I use a free geocities site. Generally, I resize the images to no more than a width of 350, otherwise it will mess up the page, so if you have images that are unusually large, this might be the result. The only other suggestion would be to make sure you have the full address and filename listed, for example: www.whatever.com/images/image.jpg
I hope this helps but if not, PM me and I’ll take a look and see what we can figure out. |
