| User | Mister Fizzle | | Topic | volume of new poetry | | Message | Something needs to be done about the speed at which new poetry is being submitted to this site. Holy crap man, most of these poems aren’t getting near the attention needed to help these poeple improve as poets. Reason being their poem is shoved off of the front page within an hour or two. I suggest raising the comment to submission ratio. You have GOT to do something to slow that monster down.
Also the comments. You said this wasn’t supposed to be a show room, but a workshop type place where poeple could improve their skills. The comments are not reflecting that at all for the most part. The "don’t leave short comments" warning that pops up is helpfull, but I think you should start centering people out and letting them know they need to write better critiques.
In closing I think your site’s format rocks. The fact that we can go in and edit our poetry, delete our poetry alone makes me prefer this site over alot of BBS type poetry boards. But I have to tell you their submissions move slower, and when someone comments on a poem it is moved back to the front page where new ppl might see that post. That is an advantage over this site in my opinion. Perhaps you could start a new area to read poetry besides Elite Submission (new poetry), something that would showcase highly commented on work. So this way if you write a poem and it is commented on say more than 10 times or something it gets a second chance to be seen by new people in this kind of "much talked about poetry" area. I dunno just a suggestion.
All this aside, the biggest proplem with this site is that the poetry has a real desposable feel to it because it disappears from the front to quickly. This in turn makes writers want to submit more or edit JUST to get their work seen again. Thats not good for anybody.

| User | Learah | 2004-11-18 | | | Subject | untitled | | Message | I think we need to make the submission ration 1:100. I really do. And the commenting boxes, give a limit of at least ten lines. If they don’t like it, tough, they can go and find a site for lazy people. So often when pressed about useless comments we hear "But I don’t know what to say!" Well, THINK. Think about what the poem said, what it made you feel, whether you liked the method that the writer used, if you’d change it yourself or if it’s just fine the way it is. Comment on the colours, the feel, the texture, the VOICE.
However there’s a flaw in my logic; I’ve noticed lately that more and more n00bs are copying and pasting the poem into the comment box with sometimes a line in the middle of it where they say "I liked this bit best". That has to be quashed. I think we should have the moderators here start working on going at people who give lame comments, rather than just watching out for abuse or plagiarism. So many people are moaning that the site has "lost something". Well it has. It’s lost the respect, time and effort that people used to put into work, and it will keep losing it until people start doing something about the lamers who are selfish. |
| User | master mind | 2004-11-05 | | | Subject | thoughts | | Message | well... what I think is that the reason why the poetry site is building up so much is because some poeple are submitting poetry that we’ve all heard before. the same old " I hate life" type stuff. but then there are those who can really write and submit some bad ass poetry. I am a new user. also a teenager. some of the coments that I have recived so far have helped me in some way to become a better writer. so I dont really see the problem with the poetry site building up. isnt that what its for? |

| User | Darc Archadya | 2004-10-01 | | | Subject | angela~ | | Message | To the first response: Not necessarily true. I’ve given 76 more comments than I’ve received, and to what avail? None. I comment on new posts, to new people, almost every day, and it’s gotten me nowhere. I’ve been able to keep my elite ratio over 5 for quite some time--and at one point it was up to 8. I’ve been able to keep my percent reciprocated over 200%--and for about a week, it was over 300. Even if you give good, solid comments that people can work with, all you get back is a "thanks for commenting, now go away" type thing on your main page. Even if you do ignore the people who don’t reciprocate, they still post. They put one or two crappy comments on one or two pieces that really need work and call it good, and add another couple of their pieces up, and get 20 more comments. It’s just not something that’s going to change. |
| User | Webmaster | 2004-09-13 | | | Subject | untitled | | Message | It’s a lot easier to order by 10 at a time, I dont want to rewrite the program since most people just look at the first few on the top of the list. Just use the next page button. It depends on the rate of commentary. Regardless of how fast the elite posts are moving, if people are extra giving in commentary we won’t have as many posts with 1 or no comments. I slow it down only because I want to lessen the effect of people just getting addicted to quick reaction rather than spending time analyzing other people’s works and thinking about the comments they just got. Many tend to try to take on everything at once. |
| User | Webmaster | 2004-09-11 | | | Subject | untitled | | Message | It’s a lot easier to give your take on a straight foward call for help subject than spending time analyzing a real peice. People are always far more likely to take the easy way than the best way. It’s more a matter of laziness to think. |
| User | Beulah | 2004-09-11 | | | Subject | untitled | | Message | What I find odd on this site is the fact that 9 out of 10 times people comment more on personal problems than the actual writing. Is this due to the more ’relaxed’ atmosphere or a lack of knowledge on the critics’ side? I’m also not too clued up on the correct terms to use but I feel a bit more thought should go into constructive critcism rather than becoming Agony Aunt columnists. |
| User | Webmaster | 2004-08-20 | | | Subject | untitled | | Message | I thought the surge of users would come when school ended but it was the very opposite. The floods usually comes from younger teens who don’t care for the ratio concept. I can’t encourage people how to comment because then they complain "You shouldn’t have the right to tell us how to comment or write." so the limit will hopefully do the trick. New writers usually type the same type of comments without detail. It’s hard not to be repetitive if you have to give three lines every time. I think this makes them at least think a little more about what to add. Over time they’ll start to see the pattens in the types of comments given, usually. The new user flood is hurting a bit because we’re getting a lot of people at once in the teen range who are a little less likely to be serious over posting. It should mathematically work fine if people are curtious but the problem is we have a high ratio of people that don’t really want to give comments that are more than three words and many people don’t want to comment at all.
I can raise the liimit before posting again, which I may do. I have to see what’s going on though. |
| User | angela~ | 2004-08-20 | | | Subject | untitled | | Message | I responded to this under the Posting Limit thread....
I would tend to agree with you on this.
I think we need to stop commenting on people that don’t reciprocate and stop commenting for people that give crappy comments. Too many selfish people here. Sooner or later people will learn that to receive comments, you must give them. |
