Q. How much have we progressed today? Is technological progress the only true progress? [20marks]

Again, this is not for school

Message  WolfStar, how do you know we’ve regressed? Perhaps some unknown is reinventing philosphy as we speak, leading us to a new Enlightenment (which was just a bunch of pretentious proto-hippies, by the way.) The fact that you’re dissatisfied means society is still in a state of flux.
I think humanity, on average, stays they same. Society cycles. There’s usually a movement to counteract the excesses and extremes of its parents, like the Reformation or the Restoration or the Puritans or the Roaring Twenties. Cultures keep reinventing themselves, unless there’s a famine or plague going on, in which case most of our higher functions shut down.
Now, however, a large number of people will never fear hunger or plague, and are free to destroy themselves in profligate waste, or debate and examine our worldview. They are also equipped with stores of history and information our forefathers could never dream to posess. Society still cycles, but it does so faster. Ideas have more hope of being accurate, and they are more easily shared and compared.

Message  I think in a way we have regressed. Thinking has become counterintuitive. Even those who deny social and political conformities have joined a clique and ceased the need for thinking.

That depresses me, particularly because that means I am a part of it.

Message  I really hate to do this, but....
Look at Bush’s approval ratings. All over the place. Lots of people change their minds, they just don’t like to admit they did.
What would you think of Israel’s government if they supported a bombing in San Fran? It’s a similar situation.

Message  Maybe (just maybe) they CHANGED THEIR MINDS???
It’s not like they each keep a piece of paper in a safe and go look, "Oh! I guess I support the Sharia! Better remember that in case I get polled! Oh, wait, the Sharia’s not popular. Can I lie, and pretend this says I don’t?"

And the other thing. I think the topic is supposed to be, Not Lying, as in Yes, I swear on my mother’s spine, This Is Not A School Assignment.

And I say, the world is safer, richer, and wiser than it has ever been.

Message  I’m confused. Are we talking about not lying, how we feel about liars, is there ever a good reason to lie? What’s up?
