 Topic  Port Management
Message  So I’m guessin’ you all have heard about the new drama with the Bush Administration wanting to hand over control of several major shipping ports on the East Coast to the United Arab Emerance. (sorry about spelling) Alot of people are screaming about safety due to the fact that two of the 9/11 bombers were from the UAE.

So what do you think? Is it a really bad idea that opens us up to God only knows what or is it ridiculous to think we’re in danger because two random people from that area were bad?
Who do you think would be better to run those ports? Us or foreign allies?

Message  I don’t think we will ever be comfortable with the idea. And Louisiana need to sue right along with NJ.

 Message  lol ouch!
In the paper this morning it said that the UAE is holding off on taking over control until the American people are more comfortable with the idea and have been assured security won’t be a problem. It didn’t say how long their willing to hold off or what their going to do with security. I thought that was rather gentlemanly of them.

Message  From what I heard on the news, the Gov’ of New Jersey is filing a lawsuit with the state and federal courts for an injunction to stop it from happening in the Jersey ports. Whether or not he gets anywhere remains to be seen.
Yeah, a little notice would’ve been nice, huh? But God forbid King George ask anyone elses opinion.

Message  sad but true. the last i’d heard it was already a deal. funny no one mentioned it beforehand, there might have been a chance to protest and speak our american rights...

Message  Well I guess I was mistaken (Gee like that’s never happened before! lol) As of the last I heard its a deal that’s already gone thru, not in the works. From what I’ve heard the UAE has been preparing to take over for four months now. We just heard about it on Tuesday. So, where it all goes from here is anyone’s guess.

Message  They’re not going to run port safety. The Coast Guard and Homeland Security will keep doing that.

Message  i’d have to go with the same answer. let a neutral country run port safety. i’m slightly behind on this issue, i’ve seen the news but i’m not too educated on its history. so forgive my ignorance, but as long as it’s ’people’ running safety at all, is it ever really ’safe’?

Message  I am concern about using the port in New Orleans. This city is still down on it’s knees, and a easy target if there was a attack on the port. As for if this being a good deal, remains to be seen. It just seems like we are inviting trouble allowing such a deal to take place. But, if it works out...we just have to see.

Message  but isn’t our country a nation of radical fundamentalists itself?

let’s ask the Native Americans.
let’s ask the African Americans.
let’s ask just about anyone on the globe who practices or used to practice a ’heathen’ religion...

Message  I see what you’re saying Rokhal, but like I said, do we take the chance that some radical fundementalist (with or without gov’t backing) decides to take the place out so his country isn’t shackled to the infedels? I’m just not sure it’s worth the risk.

 Message  Okay....
This is the United Arab Emirates, not Iran or Saudi.
I’ve been listening to a lot of hysteria (even on Fox News, what a tragedy) but the one guest who wasn’t hysterical gave some good reasons for letting the UAE manage our ports.
1. The US navy uses a port in the UAE (Dubai?) more than any other single port in the world. The UAE is our friend. It’s good to have shipping relations with them; they’re a portal to the rest of the Middle East.
2. The UAE port is a pinnacle of port management. They’re great at running ports. They’d to a great job for us.
3. The UAE is extremely progressive for a muslim nation. They’re not in league with terrorists. Two hijackers just happened to have lived in the UAE at some point; that doesn’t mean the government sanctioned their acts or was even aware of the threat.

In sum, letting the UAE looks really bad politically, but only if you have no idea what our relations with them have been. They’re allies.

Message  As much as I loath to admit it, he does have a point. How are we suppose to trust a Nation that is in so much turmoil itself? How do we relax when at any given moment, a radical could decide that his country sold it’s self to the evil infidels and now our ports are blown to hell? It’s too scary a concept. But at the same time, maybe that won’t happen and all will be well. Do we take the chance?

Message  from what i’ve heard on the news, looks like they’re buying the Port that i live near. which sucks for me. as for the ’scarcity’ of arabian terroists...haven’t you watched Fahrenheit 911?

i quite like the sound of that term, ’arabian terrorists’ think i’ll write a poem with it.
