Message  If you think going to war in Iraq was about fighting terrorism, you’re extremely naïve. You need to start watching something other than Fox News and look for some independent unbiased source. You need to start thinking for yourself. Start reading about the soldiers’ experiences over there.

And Evil, if you think your step-brother is stupid, also remember he’s got a wife and kid to support and the military might’ve been his only good option to do that.

Message  That is not true at all... you havent been to Iraq, u cant say what you havent seen. Let me put it to u this way, love, the reason the terrorist are not srewing with us anymore is cause of the decive action taken against them. What I think we need is an antiterrorist untit in america. And one placed for world communication. A force that could be called in a heartbeat if needed. We dont need the troops in Iraq, but we are fighting a war, a war that the media is being left out of.

Message  Bah. My stepbro is going to Iraq, and he’s an idiot. A wife pregnant, and he’s gunna miss her, and he already got a taste of the army--and complained until there was nothing else to say. I wonder if people stop signing up if maybe we’d grow and realize the terrorists are never going to stop until we leave them the hell alone. But then, with our country’s leadership’s brainpower, that will never happen.

Message  Mae, I don’t think anyone who joined the military before 9/11 thought they’d be in an actual war. Yes, we’d been involved in various operations but nothing like Iraq.

Message  if anybody can bitch about joining the military and then haveing to go to war
they need a bullet in their head
you never know it might hit their brain or just bounce off the rock that is rattleing around in their
it is common knowledge that when you join the military their is a chance of war
i do think that the gov could find another way to get ppl in college other than military
but that wouldnt work to the govs advantage would it

anyways....to me the only thing worth fighting for in this pathetic country is my family
and i have a shotgut and a rocken chair for that

Message  but now people who joined the military or reserves are getting something they might not have counted on - serving in a war.

I find this interesting. I myself have never been in the military, but it seems to me that if someone were voluntarily enlisting in the service - and our current military organizations are all voluntary - they should know that there is always the possibility of combat. What do they think a military is for? mae

Message  Unfortunately (or not, depending on your POV) the military is the only option some people have for acquiring skills or paying for college. It does offer value b/c it builds character and gives people skills, but now people who joined the military or reserves are getting something they might not have counted on - serving in a war.

Message  As far as talking about no courage in war and all you’ve got to do is push a button from high altitudes, etc., try telling that to the men in Baghdad, or Tikrit, or climbing through the mountains in Afghanistan or Pakistan. If you think that dropping a bomb from thousands of feet in the air is all there is to war, then you really haven’t been paying attention. mae

Message  Most of my family has or is serving in the military. I’ve lost family in WWII, Korea, Vietnam and the Iraq war. I don’t really know what to think of the military. I understand and accept their role in our country, but at the same time feel it’s ridiculous to leave such power to the whim of the child in office right now. I agree with Kanu that there’s no honor or chivalry in the fighting now. Everything is electronic or sensored or technologically advanced in some way to the point that war doesn’t become human anymore. We need to go back to the days of having to think before we fight. It’s easy to push a button, but harder to pull a trigger when you’re staring at your enemy. I also believe that recruiters should, for common decency sake, tell the truth while trying to get people to join up. Most of the military personnel we have are disillusioned because they’re promised the world, yet end up with a sandy cot. I’d be a little pissed too.
