Message  I’ll say it again, it’s not even in this country, why worry about something that’s not even a threat yet?

Message  So,who cares about Avian Flu. People think they are going to die some time or other why does if matter whether its one at a time or millions at a time. This process of dying has been around too long. It’s just a matter of mind over matter.

Message  It makes no sense whatsoever. It’s like right after 9/11 and there was the nationwide anthrax scare. People were buying plastic and drinking water by the truckloads to fight against....nothing.
I don’t know about the media in other countries, but I know here they have the credo of "If it bleeds it leads" and they take that to the extreme. I would love to hear a positive story about my community. As it is, I don’t watch the news anymore because I’m tired of being depressed or pissed of at what’s going on now.
I watched a movie a couple years ago, Bowling for Columbine by Michael Moore. In the movie he touched on how fear based our media is by looking at news reports from around the globe. In Canada, the "breaking news" story was that they had new speed bumps in a residential neighborhood. Wow. So then the question must be asked, why are we allowing ourselves to be kept in a constant state of fear and paranoia?

Message  Totally, they really do blow a lot of things out of proportion. This may seem off subject but here’s one thing about this nation that makes me laugh.

Say a factory blew up in smoke for an unknown reason (which has happened where I live) and then they finally discovered what caused it. Some toxic substance that the factory worked with blew up in the barrels it was held in. But here’s what they say...

"Workers suspect a toxic and many deadly gas has been released due to this explosion. Now they say there’s nothing to worry about, but authorities say to close and shut all of your windows and doors."

Does that make sense to you?

Message  "The media and our gov’t blows it all out of proportion and keeps us in a state of panic. My personal opinion is that they do this so that we don’t notice our country is going to hell in a handbasket."

I agree with those thoughts Traci. While the media does bring topics to awareness it also creates a fear-based society. Watch the news-- how often do you see positive things? Not a lot. It’s because sensationalism wins every time and we’d much rather find out about the latest atrocity than how many kittens got saved by an old woman doing her bit for society.

But that’s just what I think too. Journalism (however much they say otherwise) is biased according to popular trends.

Message  Good grief, I am so sick of the undue panic that is aroused by our fear based media. No, I wouldn’t worry. I live in the north, Canada being my next door neighbor, and I’m not even remotely concerned. IF and when it comes to the US, I’m sure there will be ways of dealing with and handling it. This is just like the whole SARS scare, just like the whole Mad Cow Disease, and every other "epidemic" that comes around. The media and our gov’t blows it all out of proportion and keeps us in a state of panic. My personal opinion is that they do this so that we don’t notice our country is going to hell in a handbasket. But hey, that’s just me.

Message  I don’t think it’s a big threat, the gov. is just trying to scare us into thinking it is, so people, don’t worry about it, if there’s nothing to worry about, becasue it’s not even here yet!

 Message  An excerpt from Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oseltamivir

U.S. Government policy and oseltamivir

In November, 2005, U.S. president George W. Bush requested that Congress fund $7.1 billion in emergency spending for flu pandemic prepardness (the Senate had already passed an $8.1 billion bill)[10]. Bush’s plan included $1.4 billion for government purchases of antiviral drugs[11].

Some commentators (e.g., [12]) question the motives of the U.S. government’s endorsement and planned purchase of oseltamivir, noting Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld’s close ties to Gilead Sciences, rightsholder to the oseltamivir patent. Rumsfeld is a former chairman of Gilead, and federal disclosure forms indicate that he owns between USD$5 million and USD$25 million in Gilead stock (Schwartz 2005 [13]). The rise in Gilead’s share prices from USD$35 to USD$57 per share will have added between USD$2.5 million to USD$15.5 million to Rumsfeld’s net worth.

Message  no you shouldn’t i am from north carolina so i am a southern girl too. But the bird flu has yet to adapt to the human body so its not as contagious as it could be. But once it does adapt then we will have something to worry about, and plus the birds will not migrate until fall so we don’t have to worry.

Message  "Flu" is a generic term which covers a whole plethora of different viruses. Jason is referring to influenza type A, subclass H5N1, first identified around a hundred years ago. As with all influenza viruses, it is highly mutogenic with rapid changes in its DNA, but as there has been no indication in a hundred years of mutation that it will be passed from human to human, it is unlikely that with proper precautions this "pandemic" will become anything more than something a little bit exciting for the scaremongers. Vigilance is vital, and for the awareness we can thank the media, but remember -- SARS was the new super bug that was going to wipe us out 2 years ago.

Message  Don’t believe every e-mail you get. More than 100 people die every flu SEASON.

Message  I just got an email.. I wish I hadn’t deleted it now. Basically, it said a few things. 1. 100 people have died in 9 years. Um, that’s not exactly an epidemic to me. 2. The company who produces the vaccine used to have your dear old Secretaryof Defence Rumsfeld as head (who also has major stock in it). Hmm... political scare-mongering based on acquiring profits anyone? Ha.

Anyway, there was more to the email but I’ve forgotten and I’m tired and blah blah blah. But basically, you’re being duped. But who cares, right? Keep on being scared. I’d rather die in a much cooler way than a shitty birdflu.
