| User | Chell | 2006-08-24 | | | Subject | untitled | | Message | There’s a few huge misconceptions about Wicca.
One is that they are satan worshippers. Wicca do not believe in satan- he’s a Christian entity- one that Wicca is more than happy to let the Christians keep.
Another is that casting spells opens one up to demon possesion- again, a Christian concept.
Wicca believe in using the earth and her properties to make life better. They have celebrations of the seasons. They worship a male a female diety. They have one rule- harm none.
I have a friend who brews up a potion about once a month- she puts it on her cats and it kills fleas. But because she says a few words over it (like a prayer) while cooking up her flea dip, people claim she’s evil, a heathen, a witch.
To my knowledge, no Wicca has ever been possessed by an evil spirit. The energies that they believe they tap into can be used for good or evil. But the energy is neither good or evil, it is just energy.
Most Wicca use this energy to improve life. And the reason they do this is that they believe if you harm someone that harm will return to you three fold. So, most of them are very, very careful about how they use what they believe in. |

I’m not too wild about the concept of casting spells because in my seeming ignorance you would tend to open yourself up to "spirits" who do not have your best interest at heart. We call them demons in my book. |

Depends of which kind of pagan religion you’re discussing. It could be popular because of being very old, very inclusive religions. They welcome all with open arms. They get back to nature. Soem people see it as a way to rebel agaist the constricting ideologies of Christianity. Most are based on physical things more than concepts and blind belief. Most pagan religion teach non- judgement.
But I think the numbers argue a bit about the popularity...Islam isn’t very popular right now, even with all the media revolving around it.
Rest easy, dear Monk, Christianity, with almost 80,000 groups, is still 5 times more popular. Christianity must have a better P.R. (But that makes sense, pagans are heathens; devil worshippers, witches, druids, satanists; naturalists, spiritualists, humanists... not much good can be said for any of them and Christians have made sure we are aware of that for almost 2000 years.)

| User | Blue Monk | 2006-08-23 | | | Subject | paganism 14,605 | | Message | Everything can be quantified or even qualified by numbers today. For instance, I was surprised to find out that there were almost as many discussion groups about paganism 14,605 as there are for Islam 19,605. You’d probably have to factor in that this is on Yahoo.
