 Topic  Debate
Message  Anybody feel like a break from all the heat? Why not try a fun debate. Excuse me, but I think debate should be fun. How about an intellectual challenge, something to get your thoughts flowing and compel you to speak your mind, without getting caught up in verbal fisticuffs? Just discuss, debate, talk about whatever you want.
I always thought that there was a difference between arguing and debating. Debating is civil. Not mean, not obscene. Remember that we don’t know each other personally here, and no debate or argument should escalate into personal attack.
If you think you’re old enough to use the kind of language you use here, then we should all be grown up enough to cool down, lighten up, and shake hands. Can’t we all just.....agree to disagree? I’d like to be able to discuss the things that I think matter with being clubbed over the head and kicked in the shins, thus ending up doing the same to others.

You can discuss what I brought up here and anything else, but be a bit more light hearted than the tone of the other threads. If you feel like a serious debate, go somewhere else where seriousness abounds. Please don’t pollute this with a bunch of negativity and obscenity. Thank you!

Message  Oh, I agree, debate is never going to be perfect, but I meant lets make an actual effort to be nicer. I didn’t post this thread just for a debate over debate, so...

One thing I’ve been meaning to add to the forum is a debate over stereotypes; so let’s debate over stereotypes, for starters, and anything else you want. The title of this thread, btw, had a double meaning; it was about debate itself, but also meaning a debate in general about anything.

I think stereotypes are ridiculous, at least in the way they are treated. There is no such thing as a real walking stereotype, in my opinion. Maybe with rare exception. A stereotype is a cliche image imprinted on the mind of the common imagination, and it is derived from real life, based on truth, but charicatured. It got me thinking when I heard something on NPR the other day about someone worrying about how to raise her little girl right, so as to not go after the ’gender stereotype’ of sparkly glitter, princess Barbie doll ballerina stuff, without becoming too boyish and staying true to her little girl-ness. I think that is plain silly. Just tell the little girl that she can like whatever she wants, whether that is pretty dolls or hot wheels or both. Don’t worry about being or not being a stupid stereotype, just be a normal person.
I don’t know if you guys can get much meat off this topic, but it’s just jumping off point.

Message  Ok, spelling bad, Grammer imperfect. but debate doesnt always have to be perfect, espesially on a forum. I think as long as you get the point across and are convincing, its fine. now im a 16 year old and im reading this, and honestly it makes me smile. i dont read forums normally. but my point is just relax a little, take a breathe and if you already have congrads. Now i would like a passionate Debate, but not over debate itself, so please some one find a topic and make it clear.Like wether good peotry is always witty and well spelled or if it makes you think more. just for a start, in anycase, i agree with you for the most part. good job (-_o) d

Message  Actually, let me set one thing straight: I know that some things are taken quite seriously and are inevitably offensive to some. But let’s stick to discussing the topic, not the person who brought it up. If you don’t agree with someone, say so, but don’t insult the person, don’t take at a stab at them in an attempt top hurt them for revenge because what they said hit a nerve. Be as serious as you want, as passionate as you want about the subject, but don’t aim your wit at hurting someone else. Then this forum will be taken up with people wasting their time defending themselves and not discussing the topic at hand.

And, yes, Lostinbeer, you are very right. I am a female and and I am fifteen; I am not, however, dumb and I am not a freak. So stop trying so hard to hurt my poor little feelings, because it’s not working. If you knew me, you’d know that I don’t fit into any stereo type, so stop being a stereo type jerk.

Message  disclaimer: this is light-hearted and not intended as a personal attack.

the point of arguing is to convince another individual of a personal conviction. the point of debate is to discuss various aspects of a particular topic. the difference should be obvious. what apparently needs to be pointed out is the unbelievable amount of ignorance that runs rampant in these forums. if you want to debate, than do some research and provide some sort of point to what you post. posting some stupid message that jesus saves or that abortion is murder does nothing but waste time and show one’s ignorance. and i won’t even get into the plague of illiteracy around here. wait... okay, i will. if you (’you’ being the collective form) want to be taken seriously, act like an educated adult and AT LEAST know how to spell what you’re trying to convey. it’s called a dictionary. this is a debate forum. you click the debate link to get in here. if you can’t handle the process of debating then stick to these dinky little forums about nothing. some of us are here to discuss real issues and learn from other people. there are other links besides debate if this does not appeal to you. all of the sudden immature kids are coming in here starting the most ridiculous topics and doing nothing but destroying the image of this site. this used to be a real debate forum. people used to have intelligent conversations until recently. it would be nice to enter the debate forum and see links that showed the intelligent side of human beings. and of course there will be those who will be offended by this post. sadly, 90% of them won’t have bothered to have read this far, which only proves the sole point of the post itself: if you (collective ’you’, remember) want civilized talk, stop acting like a bunch of kids, learn what grammar is, stop creating these retarded topics, and remember that this is a DEBATE forum. okay, i’m off the soap box. if you read this far, it’s appreciated. maybe someone will get it.

oh, and about the language... fuck.

Message  well i do agree that debating should be fun, but some topics are really personal for people to just relax and not take offensivly and that doesn’t make them immature.
