 Topic  Violent video games
Message  This is something that’s been bugging me for a long time, and recent developments in Britain have brought it to light again. There has long been a "Ban violent video games" campaign, which appeared to gain momentum when the game Manhunt was linked to the murder of a 14 year-old boy. However, both police and courts refuted these claims, pointing out there was no evidence to link the two. Now its sequel has become the first game in 10 years to be banned from British shelves for being too violent. Yet, from what I have read, and having seen the original, it is not that much different to its predecessor. So I have two questions:
1) Do violent games lead to people comitting violence?
2) Should they be banned, and if they were would this have any effect?

Message  You can NOT blame a video game for a person’s action. If a person is going to shoot someone, they are going to shoot someone. Is it the video game that killed the victim? I don’t think so. Video games do NOT cause violence, people do. And for the people that think video games are real and go out and shoot people, there’s something not right with them mentally. Once again, the video game is not to be blamed for their actions. They still are, regardless of their mental conditions, they’re dangerous. THEY are dangerous, not the video game. So I believe I’m logging out right now to go play Counter Strike...sue me.

Message  I have not found a link to my game, but apparently this is a very popular subject.

Search on "kill Barney" and see what I mean.

Message  I have a downloaded free game on my mac titled "Kill Barney" and it’s so much fun and satisfying to use any number of different weapons in the process including a nuke, lightning, various guns, throwing knives, etc. It’s worth finding.

Message  People kill people, whatever influences whomever, is on an individual basis. And if they were banned you’d only get thousands of people out of work, and double the price of non-violent games in the process. Now if you’ll exscuse me, I’m off to play Manhunt 2!

Message  hahah. You should! Sounds pretty cool. Only, we’d probably have to refill the blood tank after each gory game.

Message  I do not think that violent video games should be banned. I think it’s up to people what they like. I myself love to play violent video games and I have not plotted anyone’s murder yet :). It depends on whether someone is enough of an idiot to take a game, and that’s just what it is, seriously.

Haha so anyone can be called anything because everyone has something of everything albeit in a myriad of combinations that differ in the proportions of their constituents?

Alright then. I hereby label you ’articulate’. :)

I probably have come across games that I might have found insipidly violent but only one of them, Vice City GTA comes to mind at the moment. I see what you’re saying, but no matter how sensless the game I still don’t think it should be censored. What could be done is to get information out to parents to convince them to monitor what games their children are playing.

Message  Didn’t post your second article, or at least I don’t see it.. and I will read the first after this remark.

Cynical, because anybody can be called anything to a certain extent; nobody is 100% on quality, and not in the least bit it’s antagonist as well.

See, cabbalistic, I don’t disagree with what you’re saying, but can you answer one question for me: Has it never happened that you’ve avoided/ignored/not played/disliked a game because you thought it was violent just to be violent, without having any other "positive" (by your standards) qualities?
If you say no, then I get why you may be in your specific mindset. Otherwise, those are the games I am talking about, not just any random game with violence. The ones that are truly senselessly violent, or excessively violent without a real purpose behind it.

But then again, we could just say we disagree with one another.

Message  A couple of interesting articles on Scientific American. The first is an older article which reported on a link between excessive televsion-watching (not violent shows in particular, just too much tv in general) in adolescents to violence.

The second article is newer, and has a new theory for aggressive behavior in kids.
