| User | joeyalphabet | | Topic | Draft | | Message | The Army brass has been saying for the last couple of years the soldiers are being stretched too far. I knew it was only a matter of time before they started talk of reinstituting the draft. Watch out, boys and girls (yes, girls too).

So, what are your thoughts? Especially you 16-20 year olds? |

Troops are for making war elsewhere, not for building new infrastructure.
If they want someone to keep the peace, hire some police. Saddam had some called the SRG that seemed to work very well. Perhaps that is what they need again.

Ok, how about car bombs?

How about the dangers of marijuana?

How about which form of government rules America?

Global warming?

I mean, this draft one (which will of course bring up world war concepts) seems to fit right in...

Personally, I don’t have enough time on any given day. Perhaps I spend too much time on the internet? Naw, it’s all that’s keeping me sane (but even that’s a matter of opinion).

| User | H_K | 2007-08-16 | | | Subject | untitled | | Message | [The Bush administration] has decided to designate Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, the country’s 125,000-strong elite military branch, as a "specially designated global terrorist."
[It is] the first national military branch included on the list, U.S. officials said -- a highly unusual move because it is part of a government, rather than a typical non-state terrorist organization.

All we (apparently) have to do to justify attacking someone is to label them terrorists, as we have already declared War on terror. We now know the "IN" baby bush needs to enter Iran. I mean, they ARE harboring terrorists...(unless the decide to surrender without a fight and dismantle their terrorist military.)
We will need many more of America’s young to fight in Iraq (Where the country’s government is on our side and yet 160,000 American soldiers aren’t able to get the job done), Afghanistan (where we’ve allowed the Taliban to regroup while off playing in Iraq) and Iran –whose well-trained army and whole population hates us…
We will of course, have to send women this time around. (The ones who aren’t protected by their parents money or political standing, that is…)

As it is, the only people who have deemed it necessary are those making millions off the ever-expanding, greedy war machine...
And now we have radioactive detection units pouring over New York?!? I am SO glad to know we’re keeping the terrorists busy enough in Iraq that they aren’t sneaking into the United States. It is especially comforting knowing that our National Guard units are still stateside- in case a few of them get through our air-tight borders and decide to wreck more terror on all of us.
I feel so much safer. Maybe we SHOULD re-institute the draft- If we are all in Iraq there will be no need to worry about what they want to do to the US... |
| User | Blue Monk | 2007-08-15 | | | Subject | untitled | | Message | So, 16 percent of children fit into a 95th percentile weight-wise? Cool, the future of rap music is assured.
"Overweight" was identified as those in the top 95 percentile for weight of those in their age group - I did not notice whether height and muscular development, or size in general was compensated as only "weight" is being mentioned. Should not a six foot high muscular kid naturally weigh more than a 5 foot skinny kid of the same age, all else considered? I’m sooo confused.
The Center For Disease Control… any relation to NIMH? You know, the guys who like to torment rats? Read "The Three Pound Universe" just for fun.
... troops who fought in Iraq found that about one in eight reported symptoms of post-traumatic-stress-disorder - which just means that proper evaluations are finally being done, the numbers actually sound conservative to me. Ask any combat vet how many of his buddies crash regularly. War is hell.
"Corrections" was being used in the context of what is gained by completing boot camp. In terms of physical conditioning and mental preparation it has always been a general success and a positive experience for most. Now if we could just stop shooting and blowing up each other everything would be fine.

Probably not…
“So which set of skinny assed researchers are we paying attention to this time?”

“Young bodies (and minds) make corrections much easier than old.” –Blue Monk
The Army’s first study of the mental health of troops who fought in Iraq found that about one in eight reported symptoms of post-traumatic-stress-disorder. (This is a conservative number as we do not have data on those still on active duty.) (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5334479/)
There are currently 162,000 soldiers in Iraq (http://www.voanews.com/english/2007-08-14-voa67.cfm)
Meaning that if we stopped this war TODAY- conservatively speaking- we’ll see 20,250 Americans report PTSD symptoms including; flashbacks, nightmares, feelings of detachment, irritability, trouble concentrating and sleeplessness within the first few months after they come home.
Not sure I’d classify these as small corrections for the men and women who will be dealing with these affects after they return from this war to raise families and attempt to hold down jobs.

*an estimated 16 percent of children and adolescents ages 6-19 years are overweight.”
So which set of skinny assed researchers are we paying attention to this time? "Overweight" does not necessarily translate to unhealthy, while there are many underweight children (and adults) who are sickly and probably do not have enough reserve body mass to make it through a serious illness. I suggest we set desired standards of health, not weight.
Ever had a fat kid sit on you? Yeah, they can fight. What you see going into boot camp are young men and women who are skinny, fat, some fit, some not. What you see coming out of boot camp is fit, fit, fit. Young bodies (and minds) make corrections much easier than old. |

My rant- I’m sure we could put together the massive amounts of supplies, protective gear, water, food, and appropriate medical supplies to carry out a full blown war. We could tap into the surplus that our president has helped us sock away now that we’ve rectified social security, Medicare, the exportation of middle wage jobs, the illegal invasion, and that pesky crumbling infrastructure…

| User | | 2007-08-15 | | | Subject | untitled | | Message | I agree with you. My solution is let the Sunnis and Shia fight it out. Withdraw troops to the south and north to protect the marsh Arabs and Kurds (and guard the Pakistan border), and west to Afghanistan to fight the Taliban/Al-Qaeda. No matter what we do there is going to be a civil war. It became inevitible when we invaded. Obviously no one in the White House ever opened a history book... |
| User | Blue Monk | 2007-08-15 | | | Subject | untitled | | Message | Unless we plan to annex Iraq into the U.S., there are already too many of our troops there. I sincerely doubt that we will be able to prevent a bloody civil war there after kicking out Saddam any more than we could have prevented our own bloody civil war once we kicked out King George. |

I do believe if we wind up with a large force still in Iraq beyond next year the government will HAVE to do something because there just aren’t enough recruits coming in. |
