| User | Mister Fizzle | | Topic | elitist?? | | Message | Recently I heard some comments that I found a little disconcerting. You see I have been using "french titles" for some of my recent poems, and this has brought up the fact that people who use say french or latin for their titles are kind of saying they are more sophisticated than others, the word elitist even came up. First let me say I didn’t know that alot of people had adopted french or latin titles. Second let me explain how I came to do so:
Pablo Picasso started to paint evocative portrayals of blind, impoverished, or despairing people in a predominantly blue palette in 1901. His use of blue as a motif was apparently derived from the symbolic importance of that color in the contemporary romantic writings of Maurice Maeterlinck and Oscar Wilde, whose work often derived its force from depictions of madness or illness.
This was fittingly reffered to as Picasso’s "blue" period. (1901-1904)
I bring it up because it has inspired me to write a series of poems that all have "french titles" in common. I wanted them to be steeped heavily in rhyme, meter and melodic perfection(or as close as I could get with constant revision). I saw the French language as a graceful and elegant language so that is the symbolism behind that.
So anyway I hope that explains my way of thought. Lost in my own little philosophy as usual. I suppose if you wanted to stretch it you could say I am arrogant for trying to comparing myself to Picasso. But...I think that might be stretching it. I was just trying to do something inspired and cool.
peace,

Personally, I like it. If someone mentioned a poem about sex and desire here at ES, I’d say
"What one?"
But if someone said the poem about sex and desire with the french title, I’d know right off that they were talking about your "Le Trone, Desir".
Why the HELL shouldn’t you have french titles? It’s unusual and refreshing and unique in a sea of souls who seem to sway to the same wave. Stand out. Be proud :) |

| User | Juliets_dagger | 2005-01-19 | | | Subject | untitled | | Message | I know what you mean my dear. I posted a poem on here with a title in Latin and only recieved one comment on it. I think maybe the title threw some people off. Maybe it was because they didn’t have a clue what it meant, although I did explain that in the actual post. Sometimes people just need to cool it. Just because a poet wants to title something in another language (which is often for effect or enhancement of them poem, as well as explanation of the poem) doesn’t mean that they are considering themselves to be "elitists". Thats a bunch of rubbish. The first thought that pops into my head in regards to whomever said that in the first place is they might ought to pull their heads out of their behind quarters. It is very a very true thing that we prey upon the faults of others as they are often faults of our own.
It’s time to grow up kiddies, you’re in the real world not middle school. And Fizzle my dearest, don’t you worry a bit. You’re a damn good writer and anyone who says otherwise is an idiot. And you’re not foolish for posting this. Sometimes it’s important to get things out of head and off your chest. And sometimes these little twits that act like ten year olds on here need a wake up call.
Love to all God’s chilluns.

It’s just one step now to fascism, kill the elitists, death to the elitists. Strip the human, forget fiz and burg and dreamin and all those people, just jump on those damned elitists.
Drag them down to what we call our own. Fu.ck them. If small town, small time, small minds is good enough for the brunt of us, it should suit them just fine too. How dare they try something different.
Damned elitists. |
