 Topic  Classic poetry
Message  I think anyone, and I mean anyone who wants to call themselves a poet should have the respect and patience to read and study classic poetry. There is no reason not to; there is a sophisticated intelligence about that I have not seen equaled in any form of modern poetry, let alone on this site. A young person who calls himself a poet but is not even familiar with classic poetry is like a patriot who doesn’t know American history. I think it is ridiculous, and unless the person can be helped, I have no patience for someone who doesn’t have patience for classic poetry.

It took me years of reading it to finally understand the intelligence and passion of the old masters, but it’s been an enormous help the whole way.
What do you think?

Message  What if their poem just sucks?
Reading classic poetry can help with that. It opens your mind to different methods of expressing yourself---other styles, interesting images. Keeps you from getting in a rut.

Message  Which came first the Chicken or the Egg? If a person can paint beautiful paintings and invokes emotion but has never studied the masters does that invailidate his art? Shouldn’t the true essence of any type of art (poerty included) be the feelings or inspiration for it and the emotion it brings in others?
I believe if someone puts a piece of themselves into a work and it invokes emotion, then despite if they know and studied Chaucer, Longfellow and Dickinson, they are a poet.

Message  Oh yes, and I also think it is silly for someone to say that they write poetry but don’t read it; Poetry goes both ways! If you don’t know what it is like to read and enjoy and beautiful poem, how the hell are you supposed to write on e that other people can read and enjoy? It’s like selling a product that you haven’t tried for yourself!
