    Mood: The Usual

    To whom it may concern:

My name is Claudia Gonzalez, and I am currently a junior in High School with major ambitions coupled with motivation to be a first-generation child to attend college am the youngest out of seven children in my family, and so far, life has been a financial strain For example, my parents’ combined annual income is less than $40,000. In addition ______(here you can talk about other stresses/problems that have contributed to our family.....).

Despite our financial difficulties, I have had continual unyielding support from my family to excel in school and extracurricular activities. For instance, I am currently taking college-bound classes such AP Biology II, U.S. History Honors, and American Lit. Honors with a cumulative GPA of 3.5, in hopeful preparation for a successful college career. Not only have I excelled academically, but I also apply myself athletically. In particular, this past year I qualified for the National Junior Olympics for Track&Field and also qualified for Cross Country State in NV. In addition, I currently serve as captain for the varsity girls cross country team, participate in varsity track&field, and JV soccer. For extracurricular activities, I currently serve as the Secretary for the Class of 2010. I am also an Upward Bound student for the TRIO Program, am an AVID student, am actively involved in an organization called Latino/a Youth Leadership, and in Student Counsel.

Recently, the University of California, San Diego has invited me to their Academic Connections, a pre-college residential program in La Jolla, CA. The application fee is $100 and the summer tuition is $3,350. Unfortunately my parents can not afford to pay for this. I am therefore writing to ask for financial aid in helping me fulfill this aspiration of mine. I would like to attend the Academic Connections USC summer program because not only will it help me understand college life and its expectations, but it will also provide me with activities that will help me improve my scores on my SAT test. In addition, this program will aid me in choosing a college that will best be compatible with me as a person. I currently have huge dreams such as running marathons and becoming a huge Track&Field Star. Nonetheless, my biggest goal is to one day be accepted into Medical School and become a psychiatrist. Your program (whoever you’re emailing/writing) would aid me in the process of helping me achieve this greater dream of mine.
If you would like a copy of my report card, or further information, I would be more than glada to mail it to a provided address.

I appreciate any help and thank you for your time.

    Claudia Gonzalez

My family isn't able to provide me the money to pay for college, and if i'm not able to attend precollege programs, and universities; than i don't know any other way to pay for my education.

The word Family wouldn’t be able to be defined in one word. ‘Family’ it self is already explanatory. To define is to try, and explain all the love, fights, arguing you go through life. Your parents… they are more than the good night kisses, the discipline, more than the sacrifice, and all the living crap they have to go through raising you and your siblings. All this is still not enough to explain what ‘family’ is. It will be a lethargic attempt to try and explain; it can’t be written down. All I am certain of, is with out my family… I wouldn’t have a life. With in the family, there is tradition that holds culture. Remembering all the gatherings my family had, and listening to legends told, and stories by my grandparents are just held with in memories. While my relatives, and I listen to the elder’s speak of their wisdom known, my aunts would gather with tamales. A cup of coffee in one hand and another glass bottle of coke in the other. With all the food, music, and laughing… I am positive these are a few elements that make up culture… Symbolizing, Defining, trying to draw this vocabulary would not only confuse you and me, but I may as well go on forever. For the love that is created with in a family, and all that is held together by family is infinity and eternal.

Rise is something my family eats everyday. Ma said, “ You can only complete a meal with rise, beans, y tortillas.”
The family will laugh and a few would respond, “Ahhh, the typical Mexican familia.” Remembering to a few memories.
“ I still remember when your papa met your ma. Que, she thought she was some pretty thing; Y tu papa thought he was the king? Peøo didn’t he feel stupid when he was rejected.” My grandma would explain to us while laughing as she tells us one of my favorites of when my parents first met. My mom with all the giggles and my dad trying to impress everyone because he thought he knew hot to cook was just a hilarious event that brings a smile to everyone.

“All you really need are simple ingredients,” My dad would say yet it didn’t seem like it. Especially when he first tried to impress my mother. His mother had told him to pour in the tomato sauce into the rice, he accidentally instead grabbed the blender and poured what was in there. My dads looked at my mom laugh and walk out to set the table. He than grabbed the onion and mixed it with the rice. His mom realized what he has done and panicked. You will need: a blender, a pan that will be able to hold in water, rice, about 3 or 4 tomatoes (approximate to about 9 –10 people), One Jalapeno, two spoonfuls of oil, Two spoonfuls of Caldo de Sabor de Pollo, and one spoonful of Caldo de Sabor de Tomate. All this will help to give the taste to the rice.

“Simple things made and done,” My grandma would smack her lips and smile, “Each handful of rise is for every two people.” I just stand there and watch and she teaches me. Four steamed tomatoes, one steamed jalapeno, and two cups of water, blended together. While on the oven, low heated rise with a spoon full of oil. You than mix in two spoonfuls of a powder called ‘Caldo con Sabor de Tomato’, one spoonful of ‘Caldo con Sabor de Pollo’ (chicken flavor) for the rich taste of a delectable tang. You let the rise roast till a golden color (not burnt). Once a golden color you than pour in the blended tomato. After this, you may use your imagination. Add corn, onions, chili, other wise cover the pan and wait till the water evaporate and the rice is softened. This should take no more than thirty minutes.

Although, rice is very simple to make, and not very hard… It’s something we eat everyday. Just the smell of it can mesmerize you with tradition. The culture within your family fills in with smiles. It’s the memory to when my parents met, and to when my grandmother was still alive. Once you place that warm spoonful of rice into your mouth, you’ll be able to taste the love that a family has created.

ROUGH DRAFT (should immigrants be restricted)

    1) BRIEF HISTORY ON IMMIGRATION. {Introduction)

It all started when the Spanish landed on the land that was already occupied by the Aztecs and Incas. Than it began when Christopher Columbus “discovered America”. When “white people” first landed; did indigenous natives ask for visas? Did they ask for identification or for your Green Card? No, and that is because there were no restrictions in the year of 1492. The “aliens” that first landed first came here for gold. El Dorado was the rumor everyone searched for, yet Francisco Pizarro and Hernando Cortez still abused and tortured the Aztecs and Incas. As Well as Francisco and Hernando; Christopher also agonized the natives that he labeled ‘Indians’.
So why would some people consider Christopher being the first to ever begin an American Holocaust? When Christopher did not find his precious gold, he instead grabbed 1200 natives and sent them back to England. In addition of most did not even make it alive. The white people introduced diseases the swiped away a huge amount of the population of Natives. With being diseased with small pox and fevers, they also introduced a new era of weapons and war.
So is it fair for America to end the ‘melting pot’? If so, than why not just knock down the Statue of Liberty? Should the Statue of Liberty be considered an ‘alien’? It is created by Frederic Bartholdi who is a French. Considering that the Statue of Liberty is a French monument in the territory of the Americas symbolized ‘freedom’. When immigrants first arrived towards New York, the sight of the Statue of Liberty meant that they were welcomed; Hope and Rights, where everyone is created equal. So being yet of the Statue of Liberty, Aztlan also introduces itself yet in a different matter. Aztlan is defined as the “Stolen Land”. The land that extended to California belonged to Mexico. Texas might have been sold to the United States, but it was forced. As if you were to give me your home, and I were to only give you 10 dollars. Although I am using that as example, it is really how it was “sold”. Also, another subject to be introduced is the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo [signed February 2, 1848]. With this treaty, United States did not only gain Texas but as other states (Upper California, and New Mexico). Is the Treaty today considered a nihilism? In summary of the basics; Article I states that Mexico and United States shall live in peace with one another. Article II states that a convention shall be entered upon both states, and being the end of all hostilities, as well the constitutional order would be reestablished. If I am not mistaken these are only the two first postulates; out of the 23 articles that were included.
The people with ‘white skin’ arrived and claimed land and started a genocide. They established laws, and overtook the government of the Native. Yet, it’s the Native they are restricting

    2) Facts

    1. Mexicans are said to cross a river, yet the Spanish and Christopher crossed a sea of ocean.
    2. • The United States issued 448,969 immigrant visas last year to people from literally every country.
    • The U.S. issued 5.8 million non-immigrant visas, including students and guest workers.
    • 1,266,262 immigrants (mostly from Mexico) became legal permanent residents last year.
    • 604,280 foreign-born residents became naturalized U.S. citizens in 2005 (<<http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/06/01/dobbs.visa/index.html >>)

Education… the sole reason my parents “crossed the border”. They wanted my siblings and I to study for that diploma they were not able to receive in their home land, Mexico. My mother had dropped out of school when she was in the fifth grade to help maintain food on the kitchen table. My father as well, couldn’t go further with his education. For his father had been murdered when my dad was only ten years old; My father being the youngest out of 14 kids, struggled with food and shelter; along with his siblings making it mere impossible to go to school.
Now that I’m in 10th grade I have set myself a goal to graduate high school with an honors diploma. I will not settle for anything less, for I know my parents would have done the same thing as well. I will be entering my junior year with honor courses, Student Counsel, and an AP class. I know I will have a rigorous and a challenging schedule with sports to attend as well as tutoring on Sunday mornings. In Student Counsel I will be secretary for the class of 2010, more over I will also be joining the Cross Country team, and Track & Field team of Eldorado High school. Not only will I be committing to sports, but to my Honor/ AP classes. All that I have mentioned is a precedent to I because they will indeed, help me gain and expand my knowledge, but most importantly it will give me a glimpse at what college may be like: a rigors challenge and necessary evil to succeed. My schedule will be meticulous, yet it will instruct me into managing my daily activities, forcing me to prioritize my daily tasks with careful planning, and without procrastinating.
One reason why I try so hard is due to the fact that my mother works in housekeeping and my father works as a custodian at a casino, with all their bills I see how they still struggle, barely making for the mortgage, taxes, car/life/health insurance, and other life necessities. By the time they are done paying all their bills it seems that not any is left for my college fund. That is why I must work diligently so that hopefully I can get scholarships for college, and one day repays my honorable parents. My observation of my hard working parents not only forces me but it also motivates me to stay in school and accomplish the tasks that seem to me infallible yet impracticable to others. Just by this, my parents have motivated me to apply to universities that seem impossible to get into- such as Princeton, Duke, and Harvard. Although the universities I want to attend is Boston University, Yale University, Michigan State University, or Colorado State. I want to major in Psychology, Criminal Justice, and the basics of Medicine. I know I will have to take more courses, but I am willing and eager to take as many classes that may help me propel further in life, but most importantly…re-thank my parents with something they themselves were unable to attain, a good and rewarding education.
My parents came here “illegally.” It’s an incongruous thought to think that they came here to steal any ones job, or to take up place. They came here for my sisters, brothers, and me. I am taking this opportunity to do well in school and make our life less stressful. Where I don’t have to pay for an education, and while God allows me, I will graduate with an honors diploma, and shoot for something higher than me, a good college, and nothing less.
