“Mistress!”

A raspy little voice interrupted Mastema’s thoughts. The demon matriarch turned to face one of her minions, “What is it?” Her unearthly voice cut through the darkness.

The smaller demon approached cautiously, “The warriors have assembled, and have surrounded the city. If we strike tonight we have a good chance…”

Mastema raised a hand to silence the messenger, “I have already given the orders to stand down. Tonight is not the night.” She turned her attention back to the city below her. “How many times must I tell you fools?! Humans are not to be taken so lightly. There are many and they are no strangers to war. The guerilla warfare that our brethren have attempted in the past has gained us nothing.” She placed a hand on her hip, “We must observe, plan, and then execute.”

Kinaru unlocked the front door of his small shop downtown. Night was falling and he knew what was coming. All the other stores were closing down, but he was just opening. He knew demons were arriving more and more often, and those who fight them would need the wares he offer to fend them off. He wondered what the night ahead, and thought about the possiblity of sneaking off on his break to fight some demons himself.
