Thanks for commenting on Lakesblue! Yes there is an extra syllable in 3rd line. But is it really an extra syllable, in English prosody? What exactly is the status of a diphthong? I think professors have murdered other professors over this huge question! Makes yer wonder eh?
Haiku in English is so popular, despite all the puzzles that arise from importing a verse-form into English. However, all our traditional verseforms have been imported from various other languages! And they all had to cope with how versatile and adjustable this language is!
You might have met ES user Hanuman? Well to quote him, he reckons haiku isn't really poetry at all! But I guess he's too late. Like a skin fungus, haiku has already found its place on the body of English verse!
I like your poems, but you must have been away for awhile because they don't have any boxes for comments!
I think my general comment is, you are a fine storyteller and have styles of verse that suit the romantic and the ironic ... an ornamental, picturesque way of saying things and a skill in constructing verse, and all these things go together so that you strike me as a more interesting/entertaining/instructive poet than a lot of folk hereabouts who fancy themselves as profound souls!
(I'm one of the latter, so not really being rude to people eh?)
Hey Mike, I was delighted to see that you had been by and thanks for reading and leaving a comment on "Paper Roses" and "The Song Of Leaves". It's great to see you visiting the site again!
I keep being tempted to exit Elite, but keep hanging around; partly because of some wonderful friends here, and partly out of habit.
I'm posting a lot at Starlight Cafe nowadays. They have facilities where one can add background and a music score to the writings, which I like. I don't add music to all poems; only those where I can find a score that truly fits the mood and meter of the poem. "The Song Of Leaves" has a music score there that really improves the whole format of the work.
