    The poem is pretty much about the horrible reality of war and dying on the battlefield. The soldier realizes he is dying and that there is nothing he can do now, so he gives in and accepts it:

    "May this wet grass kiss my life away"

    Now that you know more about it, you probably realize that it is a pretty strong message.

    Thanks for your comment on "The Day of Forty-Four Sunsets". The flower is actually a flower. In the story, the Prince has a flower on his planet that always seems to demand attention. But in this poem, the sunsets are so beautiful that she forgets herself for but a moment.
