Had a bit of inspiration recently, and this little exerpt from Dan Simmons's Ilium echoes that inspiration. I thought it appropriate to post considering the recent posting of Jungian archetypes and my preoccupation with Billy Collins and his waterskiing.

    My comments in parens:

"Perhaps your Bard (Shakespeare) is more like Koros III, leading this outward expedition. My sweet Proust is more like you, wrapped in the coccoon of The Dark Lady (The name of a submarine in the story--also a reference to a persona in the Shakespearean sonnets) and diving deep, seeking the geography of reefs and the hard bottom and other living things and the whole world through echo-location."

It's been a long time since I met him. I remember feeling very silly asking him to sign my copies of Hyperion and Fall of Hyperion. He seemed like a normal person.

I haven't read Illium yet, but I've met Dan Simmons. He graduated from my Alma Mater, Wabash College. Have you read the Hyperion Books? The College Planet he talks about there is based on my school.
