Nah, I know what you mean. As soon as it's labelled as poetry people expect it to be more deep and complex, even if there's no other reason to believe it.

    So annoying :-/

I read My Papa's Waltz by the way. I like it. It's pretty obvious how it can be read as the drunken father beating the son though so I think Roethke probably should have expected it. It really doesn't take that much analysing to come to that conclusion (but maybe that's because I've read it with what you said in mind?)

I do a bit of both, I sometimes feel like I don't have enough time to get through stories though.

I was in the middle of a few ideas and then my hard drive just completely broke down on my laptop last week. So all the writing I now have is literally the stuff on here stupid computers... I'm gonna start printing things and backing up.

On the flip side, it means some poets can be really lazy about what they write because they know that someone will probably dig too much out of it.

I know someone who writes poetry and just puts down whatever comes to his mind, whatever sounds random and interesting, then comes up with a meaning afterwards and feels profound when he tells people what it 'actually' means.

Totally agreed. Whenever we're analysing poetry in seminars and someone comes up with an incredibly deep idea I just stop and really wonder whether the poet really meant that.

As long as it makes you feel something, makes you consider things and come up with these ideas, it's serving a purpose.

But it's easy to be a touch too cynical sometimes too =P
