The message of the "Dunes" is that once where there was a flat seashore nature thought to build dunes to keep the sea from ravishing (eroding) the shore. Now that there are dunes it can be said there is a goodbye ('bye') to the eroding effects of the sea. Also the 'bye' can be pronounced 'by' meaning there by the sea.
