Beginning the End. (Legend of the BellDame)
Deep breaths…Just keep taking deep breaths. I told myself as I sat on the roof of my apartment building. The cool night air did little to sooth the fiery panic that lay nestled in my ribcage. I listened absently to the ruckus below, the noise of the New Year’s celebration that took place every January 1st in front of Big Bens clock tower. I had not taken part. I had simply wanted to go home, nestle up in bed, asleep, far away from that horrid clock. Incidentally my gaze wandered up from the celebrations to the large handed, large handed clock tower eclipsing the moon. I shouldn’t be out here; I shouldn’t be under that pale white gaze that had caused my panic to start with.
No. I shouldn’t blame the clock. It wasn’t the clocks fault. It was the BellDame, The spirit that lived in the clock, the ghostly bell ringer that seals my fate every night in my dreams. Her story is old, but simple. She was the wife of the bell ringer of Big Ben back in…I don’t know the time period…it was long ago, that I know. Anyway. She had woken at midnight, on New Year’s Eve, and as a symbol of the beginning year. She rang the bell. As she did, she fell to her death.
Now she has warped into a vengeful spirit, one that on every New Year’s as the bell rings, it is not to symbolize the beginning of a new year. But a death.
My death…At least that’s what was in my nightmares. I was puled from my thoughts as the crowd below began to shout the 10 second count down to the chime. I felt my fear grip my heart tighter, as my nightmare began to shadow over into reality. My death at the chime I feared irrationally. The shouts grew louder
5, 4, 3, 2, 1…
The first bell sounded loudly, I jumped, the sound shaking me to my core. Looking down at my shaking hands I heard the second bell chime. It was just a dream…I’m fine… I thought as my fear was replaced by joy my eyes lifting back up to stare at the clock, The third, fourth and fifth chimes sounded. This is the beginning…a new year It chimed once more. I’ve lost count. A pause. My joy was sucked away from me as my breath stopped, eyes going wide I clawed at my chest as I stumbled forward, toward the ledge. No… a voice not my own sounded through my mind as I plummeted to the celebration below.
