In regards to your very generous attempt at finding the book - I was hoping that it was, and for a second I almost did believe so, but the cover doesn't look exactly right and the author's name doesn't ring a bell. For the most part, it's similar, but the angle capturing the glass made it look more or less 2D. Plus, the font on this book you linked me varies, whereas the one I'm talking about had a simplistic style with dark grey text and only 2 variants of font.
There is one thing that I can be sure of, though; The book was majorly composed of photographs, taken by dozens of different photographers from all over the world.
It was a phenomenal book not for its information, but its presentation.

I'll just have to request that the person I gave it to e-mail me the title and author. I'll make sure to let you know!
