LET US HOPE THEY DO SO (in defense of Real Vampires).
When people think of Vampires they often think of men dressed in black with a long mantles and huge fangs, or of women dressed in red with long black hair and fangs.
And that was what I used to think too.
At least until I met a person that I will call Gabrielle.
We met one day at the train station and we begun to talk. I happened to be reading “Bram Stocker’s Dracula” and said that I was very fascinated with the character of count Dracula and with Vampires in general. I had always been.
She looked at me and laughed.
“What are you laughing at?” I asked looking very puzzled.
That was the moment in which she told me she herself was a Vampire.
I looked at her as I was even more puzzled than before.
And she began to explain.
She was not the sort of Vampire we all imagine, she was what is called among insiders a Real Vampire.
“What is a Real Vampire?” I asked. I continued to be puzzled.
Well, let me try to explain it to you as she explained the whole matter to me.
Real Vampires are just regular human beings just like everyone else, with just one difference.
As much as you and I crave a plate of pasta or a salad they crave blood.
And it is not just a matter of hunger; it is a matter of physical need.
For some inexplicable reason(at least inexplicable to me) these people have a physical need for blood, and after a set period of time without it these human beings(and I want to underline HUMAN BEINGS, as they are regular human beings just others) begin to be sick, just as we begin to be sick after eating, or to be precise drinking, and they call their need for blood not hunger but thirst(for obvious reasons, for blood is not eaten, it is drunk).
They need this blood for energy. They extract from it the vital energy which blood carries within.
Not all Real Vampires though drink blood.
Some of them in fact, the ones called Psy Vampires (to distinguish them from the blood drinkers who are called Sanguinarians) need people’s inner energy, and they can gain it by contact with other people.
These people though are different from the Vampires most people have come to be accustomed to by reading books or watching TV shows such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer (though I have to admit I would not mind meeting a Vampire like Spike…) for the fact that they do not steal blood or energy from people, and, to reassure everyone THEY DO NOT KILL.
There might have been cases of Real Vampires killing for blood, I should think, but the killing does not depend from the fact that they are Vampires; they would have done it anyway because it is in their nature of human beings, not in their Vampire nature.
So how do these Vampires get what they need?
There are various ways to get what they want.
Some of them, in moments of shortage, drink their own blood, but that does not give them enough energy to last for long.
Another way of getting blood is through the help of some people who like to call themselves DONORS. These people, just like organ donors, donate their blood (in small quantities of course) to Vampires they know.
And then there’s animal blood, easily attainable by eating rare meat.
So, no killing and no slaughtering do not worry.
Do these people sleep in coffins?
Of course not, Gabrielle reassured me.
And can they go out during the day?
Gabrielle assured me they can, but they do not like to as the light of the sun bothers them. They prefer to hang out at night, after the sun has set. They do not feel the need to sleep at night; they prefer to sleep during the day.
Some of them even get the fever if they spend too much time is in sunlight.
I know that most people now,
after reading the article will think that I probably spent too much time in the sunlight myself, and that such a prolonged exposure has caused me to get hallucinations. But I can assure you that it was not a sunny day at all. Otherwise Gabrielle probably would not have been there.
Others will probably think I am on drugs
But I can assure you these people exist.
And I can assure you they are anything but the dangerous blood suckers portrayed in books and movies.
So please, forget about Count Dracula, or about old manner Spike, and think more of someone like Angel or the new Spike(for those of you who are not familiar with Buffy the Vampire slayer, Spike and Angel are Vampires who do not kill people for blood anymore).
It would be great if after reading this brief article people would actually decide to read a few books or search on a few internet sites on the matter, and it would be even greater if the people who read the article finally stopped thinking of Vampires as supernatural creature who transform themselves into bats and enter people’s houses in search for blood.
They are not that, not at all, they are just human beings like everybody else, and I have written this article so that maybe more Vampires will come out of the shadow to tell us about their fascinating experiences.
Let's hope they do so.
