In memory of little A
=============
You were the sunshine in my life
The apple of your father's eye
Like a little hero conquering the world
Laughter and love you did supply
Your first six summers was a joyous time
Winter with you was wonderland too
Autumn and spring memories intertwined
How did I know you'd leave me so blue?
I kissed your knee and tear strained cheek
That first time you fell when I paid little heed
Little knowing there would be many next times
Little knowing where it would one day lead
When he told us grim faced, the devastating news
The unpronounceable name etched in my brain
I hardly remembered that I had to breathe
My baby was dying, my life was in vain
Yet little hero, you were never more so
Needles and scalpels, you bore them all
In the midst of your pain, you comforted us
when we broke down, you stood so tall
"Don't give my toys to my little cousin,
He may have them after my birthday
I know you'll make it special this year
You don't turn seven every year anyway!"
You grinned and said you couldn't wait
To go back to school and play in the sun
My little hero was getting better
If anyone could make it, he was the one
Then one day without warning
You took a turn for the worse
Why do I remember every minute of this ordeal?
Your father ran and screamed for a nurse
I held you down as best as I could
The end came - it was over in a minute
But in my heart, I live it everyday
My little hero, my sunshine
How am I to go on?
Yet even though it tears me apart
And I'll never be whole again
I don't wish you were never in my life
You'll always be my little hero
Thank you for six years of teaching me to love |
