    dotsYears Laterdots

    Carcass-strewn battlefield
Time and dust their only funeral
Dried blood like scabs on bullet-chipped rocks
Who can tell them apart from withering flowers of an extinct kind

What else sways in the gentle wind
Than a wounded flag with a certain passion
A sad sight that seemed to reflect
The unceremonial deaths of those ambitious young

Their jaded, curled fingers point accusingly
Their colourless, void eyes look blamingly
Their new wedding rings, now stained, shine innocently
    Towards a battled cause unrepented

Though their bodies were mutilated by whistled shells
Their faces twisted to a ghastly grimace
And their spirits departed for another world
Their dreams float in the wind, wherever it blows

When the fabled flowers dance to the sky-ward breeze
A comfort to that place of restless souls
To take our breaths and fill our lungs
With the flowing scent of reminiscent hopes

    We remember.

The dead on the battlefield. I like how you looked at it. The first verse stands out to me the most. Time and dust their only funeral.
