Chapter 11 - A New Niche
"I think I'm just going to go home Danielle, if that's alright." Camille stated as she looked at the tall, dark, exhausted beauty. Danielle seemed just a tiny bit hurt, but tried not to show it.
"That's alright, I completely understand." Danielle said, and nodded her head in silent approval. Camille could tell that she wasn't lying when she said she completely understood. "Would you like me to walk you back home?" Danielle continued.
"No, I'll be fine by myself."
"Alright. At least let me walk you to the door." Danielle said, and shifted her weight from one foot to the other, as if she was getting impatient.
"Of course..." Camille started, and then trailed off. She looked around the room at Faye, Chance and Kyarii. They were all very nice. She then looked back at Danielle. "Do you four meet up every Saturday in your basement?" and as soon as the words escaped Camille's mouth, Faye began to let out faerie-ish, bubbly giggle.
"Well, of course... We do meet up every Saturday..." She began to speak in between bouts of giggles, but her sentence was about to be finished off by someone else.
"...And about any other time we're all free at the same time." Chance concluded.
"None of us really have much of a social life." Kyarii stated very matter-of-factly. They were all standing now, rather closely together.
"Well, that's just another thing we have in common." Camille thought.
Danielle smiled at Camille. "I know what you're thinking. The next time they're all over here, I'll give you a call, ok?"
"Thank you... And it was nice meeting you guys. I'm sorry that this had to happen." Camille said
"Don't be sorry, Camille, it's not your fault." said Faye, and Danielle touched Camille's arm lightly as a gesture to follow her up the steps.
The two ascended the steps, exited the basement, and walked slowly to the front door. Danielle looked around the room for a moment, as if trying to remember where she put something. Then she pulled open a drawer and took out a scrap piece of paper and a pen. She scribbled down 7 digits, her phone number, and ripped it off and handed it to Camille. She passed her the pen and the paper for her to write down my phone number. She did.
"Danielle...? Thank you" Camille said softly.
"Oh, what, for the phone number?" Danielle was slightly puzzled.
"No, thank you, for everything. You're amazing..." Camille continued.
Danielle's usually pale white face was going slightly rosy. She looked away from Camille for a minute, and seemed to be very interested in something on the floor.
"Danielle...?"
At the sound of her name, she looked up again into Camille's face.
Camille quickly leaned forward and placed a quick, chaste kiss on Danielle's soft lips. Danielle didn't startle, didn't pull away.
They just stood there for a few moments. Danielle made a few small strained noises, like she was about to say something, but was struggling to get it out. After about 10 long seconds, Camille said goodbye and let herself out.
Camille ran home, all the while thinking of Danielle and those rosy lips. She was also swearing at herself the whole way home. She was so confused about her feelings right now, if there were any at all.
She ran down the driveway up to her house, and she opened the door and entered the house quietly. Like always, Camille headed straight to her room, ignoring everybody else in the house. She opened her bedroom door, and she saw Teia sitting in her computer chair. |
